Newport shines in tournament
The Newport Harbor High field hockey team outscored four opponents a
combined 4-1 Saturday, but settled for two wins, one loss and a tie
at the Westminster tournament at Westminster High.
The Sailors opened the round-robin tournament -- that featured
25-minute games -- with a 1-0 loss to Camarillo.
The Tars defeated Sunset League rival Huntington Beach, 3-0,
before knocking off Chaminade, 1-0, and tying Glendora, 0-0.
Senior midfielder Reese Simmons scored two goals against
Huntington Beach, while senior right wing Julia Bernay added the
third goal against the Oilers.
Junior forward Sienna Palmer had an assist in the 3-0 triumph.
Against Chaminade, senior midfielder Jenny Taylor had the game’s
only goal.
Newport Harbor goalie Ciara Lawrence, a senior, had seven saves
against Camarillo, one against Huntington Beach and two against
Glendora on her way to three shutouts on the day. She played every
minute in goal for the Sailors (3-1-2).
Other Sailors who earned praise for their strong play were: senior
Ashley McIntosh, who sparked the midfield; senior forward Amanda
Fallon; and junior center back Jackie Taylor.
Vanguard streak ends
* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University’s six-match win streak came to
an end Saturday as La Verne defeated the Lions, 47-45, 17-30, 30-21,
30-18, in the Whittier/Occidental women’s volleyball tournament.
