Anteaters beat USF

The UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated the San Francisco Dons,

2-1, in the final game of the UC Irvine Nike/Holiday Inn invitational

Sunday at Anteater Stadium.

Junior Joy Grey opened the scoring in the 14th minute with an

assist by senior Gina Scachetti.

The Dons answered back seven minutes later to tie it with a goal

from Stephanie Gray off a cross from Shuree Hyatt.

Anteater sophomore Lauryn Birkinshaw scored the game-winner in the

42nd minute with assists by senior Tara Weldon and sophomore Lauren

Baer.

Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Welliver had fives saves for the

winners, who improved to 3-2-1.

USF goalkeeper Stephanie Beall had three saves.

Portland State was named champion of the tournament after posting

seven points. UCI was second with six points and USF third with five.

UC Irvine senior Julie Scheppele was named the tournament’s Most

Valuable Defensive Player, while Portland State sophomore Sophia

Mundy was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player.

UC Irvine will go on the road to Texas, where it will face the

Texas A&M; Aggies Friday at 6 p.m. in College Station. The Anteaters

will face the Baylor Bears Sunday at 11 a.m. in Waco.

In other college soccer action:

* The UC Irvine men’s soccer team picked up its second straight

shutout with a 1-0 overtime victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay at the

Lakeside Classic in Evanston, Ill. Sunday.

Freshman Rudy Mondragon scored the game-winner in the third minute

of the first overtime, with assists by sophomore Brad Evans and

sophomore Brandon Tario.

UCI junior goalkeeper Ryan Mathy picked up his second straight

shutout of the season with two saves.

Phoenix goalkeeper Pat Czuprynski had seven saves.

The Anteaters and Northwestern each finished with two wins in the

tournament, but the Wildcats were crowned champions by virtue of a

tie-breaker.

Mathy, Mondragon and senior Chris Klotz represented the Anteaters

on the all-tournament team.

* The Vanguard University men’s soccer team exploded in the second

half to rout visiting Grand Canyon, 5-0, in a nonconference game

Saturday night.

After a scoreless first half that featured several close calls by

the Lions offense, senior Matt Hess put the hosts up for good with

his team-leading eighth goal of the season. The tally was set up by a

Jose Hernandez assist.

Senior Armando Ortiz, an Estancia High product, followed up with

his first goal of the season, heading in a low cross from David

McAulay.

Jimmy Grigas scored on an Ortiz assist in the 71st minute and

Hernandez tacked on an unassisted goal.

McAulay completed VU’s second-half outburst by cashing in an

assist from Andrew May.

Vanguard junior goalkeeper Chris Swift had seven saves to earn his

first shutout of the year.

Vanguard improved to 3-2, while Grand Canyon fell to 0-6.

* The Vanguard University women’s soccer team, down to 12 healthy

players, fell to Cal State Dominguez Hills, 4-1, in a nonconference

game Saturday in hot and muggy conditions in Carson.

Vanguard stayed close with the NCAA Division II Toros until late

in the second half. As fatigue set in for the Lions, the Toros

charged ahead with three goals in the final 17 minutes to break a 1-1

tie.

Dominguez Hills (4-2) opened the scoring in the 19th minute, as

Tara Senff found the net.

Junior Heather Tape got the equalizer for Vanguard, which managed

eight shots on goal before halftime.

Midway through the second half, Rachel McDonald took a pass from

Kristen Walsh to put the hosts ahead for good.

Corrie Hirokawa took a through pass from Candace Hearn and beat

the VU goalkeeper to the far post to add to the lead and McDonald

added an insurance goal in the 88th minute.

Vanguard (2-2-1) hopes to have a couple injured players ready when

it visits La Verne Wednesday.
