* But for lining up offsides a couple times, Newport Harbor was

typically well prepared to execute in Thursday’s 20-7 win over

Fountain Valley.

But when it was over, the Sailors displayed their inexperience by

bolting from the midfield handshake line in the opposite direction

their coaches were waiting for them. After unsuccessfully trying to

get the players attention as they sprinted toward the opposite goal

line, Newport Coach Jeff Brinkley finally relented and began jogging

toward the Sailors’ celebratory huddle.

* The 42 points put up by Sage Hill School (1-0) in its

season-opening win over Midway Baptist Friday tied a school

single-game scoring record. The first 42-point output came in 2002 in

the Lightning’s varsity debut against Midway Baptist.

* Keya Manshadi’s four touchdowns in Sage Hill’s 42-14 win Friday

set a school record for most points in a game. The junior now has

seven touchdowns in his Lightning career.

* Bryce McKendry’s 188 rushing yards were the most for an Estancia

player since Andy Romo gained 217 against Santa Ana Valley in 2000, a

span of 37 games.

* Sage Hill sophomore Don Ayres set a school record with 179

rushing yards in the season-opening win over Midway Baptist, besting

Eddie Huang’s 176-yard performance set last year against Midway

Baptist.

* Sage Hill Coach Tom Monarch on junior defensive tackle Morgan

Brief, who blocked a Midway Baptist PAT try: “He is 5-foot-4, but

plays like he’s 6-5.”

* The Magnolia High announcer had trouble saying Estancia

correctly. He referred to the school as “Estanza,” “Esperanza” and

“Esperia.”

* After Fountain Valley used 4 minutes, 43 seconds to drive 70

yards for a touchdown after fielding the opening kickoff against

Newport Harbor, the Barons’ averaged just 1:43 on their final eight

possessions as the Sailors built more than an 11-minute advantage in

time of possession.

* One very atypical occurrence for Newport Harbor was its failure

to produce a rushing first down until there was 1:17 left in the first half. The Sailors’ typically strong running game rendered just

117 yards. Dating back to last season, the Tars have failed to

produce a 100-yard rusher in three of their last four games. Prior to

that four-game stretch, a Sailor had rushed for at least 100 yards in

16 of 17 contests.

* Corona del Mar High’s 35-9 win over Costa Mesa Friday marked the

35th game between the Sea Kings and Mustangs. CdM leads the series,

27-8. The 26-point margin of victory was the third-largest

differential in the series.

* Tom Baldwin is now 0-9 against Corona del Mar as the Costa Mesa

High coach.

CdM Coach Dick Freeman is 5-3 against Mesa and has won three

straight against the intra-district foe.

* The Estancia High helmets were without new “Eagles” script

decals for the second week due to slow delivery.

* There were no concession stands open at Western High for

Thursday’s Estancia-Magnolia game, much to the dismay of many in

attendance.

* Corona del Mar had 25 penalties for 190 yards through the first

four games of 2003. The Sea Kings have amassed 22 penalties for 250

yards in the first two games of 2004.

* Corona del Mar was assessed 14 penalties for 145 yards against

Costa Mesa Friday, the most since the Sea Kings were flagged 22 times

for 217 yards against Laguna Beach in the Pacific Coast League opener

last year.

* Sage Hill and Midway Baptist combined for just three penalties

totaling 35 yards.

Monarch said his players receive severe punishment, in the form of

extra conditioning, if they jump offsides in practice.

* Estancia used three long snappers in its 33-26 win over Magnolia

Thursday, but still had problems with the ball reaching the designed

destination.

* Costa Mesa cheerleaders were selling glow-in-the-dark neon green

necklaces for $3, or two for $5.
