Change could offer more get up and go

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill Friday that will increase

the number of city representatives on the Orange County

Transportation Authority board from six to 10 -- two from each of the

five county supervisorial districts.

The number of voting members will jump from 11 to 17. Changes will take effect on Jan. 1.

Assemblyman Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), the bill’s author, touted

the expansion as a means of getting densely populated cities more

representation on the board, which weighs in on county transportation

projects. The change will also make it easier for smaller cities like

Newport Beach and Costa Mesa to get a representative on the board,

since there are two voting methods that will be used -- one based on

population and one on a direct vote.

The board now has four county supervisors, six city

representatives and a public member who vote. No city officials from

Costa Mesa or Newport Beach are on the board.

Gypsy Den site of a little bit of love poetry

Lee Mallory and Ricki Mandeville will recite poems on romantic and

ethereal love in “Love ‘n’ Change: A Performance in Poetry & Song.”

Courtney Montgomery will provide accompanying music.

The performance begins at 8 p.m. today at the Lab’s Gypsy Den

Cafe, 2930 Bristol St., Costa Mesa.

UCI diabetes center

to open next week

UC Irvine will celebrate the grand opening of the new Joslin

Diabetes Center on Sept. 21. Doctors at the center will perform

research and offer patients education and advanced treatments for

diabetes.

Partly funded by a $210,000 donation from the Pediatric Adolescent

Diabetes Research Education Foundation, the center is a partnership

with the Joslin Diabetes Center affiliated with Harvard Medical

School.

Dr. Ping Wang, a UCI endocrinologist, will head the center. He and

his colleagues are researching how to help children with type 2

diabetes. In California, more than 1.5 million people have diabetes,

according to a statement from the UCI Medical Center.

The grand opening event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Sept. 21 at the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Center, 100 Academy Drive,

Irvine. The event includes a luncheon, speakers and tours of the
