Mesa Verde Country Club’s Pete Daley, playing on his home course,

needed an eight-hole playoff to secure the first alternate spot

following a 73 Monday in a qualifier for the United States Golf

Association senior amateur national championship.

Daley, who just last week qualified for the Southern California

Golf Association senior amateur championship held later this month,

was one of four golfers to shoot 73, one shot behind Karl Stewart Sr.

of Chino Hills (72). Stewart earned the sixth and automatic berth,

from a field of 96 golfers, into the USGA national championship,

scheduled Oct. 9-14 at Bel Air Country Club.

Placentia resident Steve Bogan earned medalist honors with a 66,

two shots ahead of Capistrano Beach’s Stephen Yavorsky (68).

The qualifier was originally scheduled for Victoria Country Club

in Long Beach.

But when eight of Victoria’s greens experienced difficulty 3 1/2

weeks ago, USGA officials contacted Mesa Verde, requesting a venue

change.

Tom Sargent, Mesa Verde’s head pro, with the approval of the board

of directors, agreed to host the qualifier.

* Newport Beach resident Steve Jurgenson finished in a three-way

tie for 35th place in the California State Open held Sept. 1-4 at the

Southern California Golf Association Golf Course in Murrieta.

Jurgenson finished at 1-over-par 289 (68-76-73-72) on the par-72

layout among 164 golfers.

Valencia resident Jason Gore (12-under) needed two playoff holes

to secure the title.

Former UC Irvine standout Jeff Coburn (3-over) failed to make the

final cut out of 66 golfers.

* The first Wingnuts charity golf tournament will be held at Costa

Mesa Golf & Country Club Oct. 4 with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.

The tournament will feature a putting contest, a hole-in-one

competition, complimentary beverages along the course, an awards

luncheon and prizes for longest drive and closest to the pin.

Cost is $100 while non-golfers may purchase tickets for the awards

luncheon for $20 each. Entry forms are available at Wingnuts’ Costa

Mesa location at 3030 Harbor Blvd.

Proceeds from the event will be used to underwrite several

programs and services for children involved with the nonprofit

Westside Boys & Girls Club.
