Tars shut out Bonita
Sasha Grumman and Lara Schilling both scored single goals and that
was all the Newport Harbor High field hockey team needed to defeat
host Bonita, 2-0, Tuesday.
Grumman and Schilling, both juniors, scored their goals off
penalty corners in front of the Sailors’ new head coach, Kristy
Cross.
Senior goalkeeper Ciara Lawrence stopped 10 shots in tallying her
fourth straight shutout for the Sailors (4-1-2), beginning at last
week’s Westminster tournament.
Cross took the reins from Piper Archibald, who started the season
as Newport’s coach and is now guiding the program’s junior varsity
squad.
Cross, a teacher at Newport, and Archibald, who teaches fourth
grade at Wilson Elementary School, switched jobs to better coincide
with their schedules, Newport boys athletic director Eric Tweit said.
On Thursday, the Sailors host Westminster, coached by Sharon
Wolfe, who guided Newport for the prior eight seasons, including last
fall’s run to the Tournament of Champions title.
