Sailors, Sea Kings on the rise
Two local football teams have climbed spots in the weekly CIF
Southern Section rankings.
Newport Harbor High was No. 5 in Division VI, but moved up to No.
2 following its 20-7 season-opening victory over Division I opponent
Fountain Valley (0-1). The Sailors (1-0) play another Sunset League
team, Marina (0-1), at 7 p.m. Friday.
The Sea View League is well-represented in the Division IV poll.
Irvine (1-0) is No. 6, Foothill (1-0) No. 10 and Aliso Niguel (1-0)
received votes as a team to watch. Lakewood Mayfair (1-0) rose from
No. 3 to No. 1 in the division following its 26-0 season-opening win
over Cabrillo.
Corona del Mar (2-0) has scored 35 points in each of the first two
games this season and moved from No. 7 in Division IX to No. 6. The
Sea Kings made quick work of Estancia (1-1), 35-14, and Costa Mesa
(0-2), 35-9, to open the season and face Troy (1-0) Friday at
Fullerton High.
Pacific Coast League foe Tesoro (1-0) is ranked No. 2, and
Northwood (0-0-1) is named in the others category. Fullerton (1-0)
remains the top team in the division after beating La Mirada, 28-13,
Friday.
Sage Hill School received recognition as a team on the rise in
Division XIII after its 42-14 blowout victory over Midway Baptist.
Every Academy League is included in the divisional poll. St.
Margaret’s (1-0) is No. 4, Capistrano Valley Christian (1-0) is No. 5
and Brethren Christian is included with the Lightning as a divisional
team to watch. The top team is Pasadena Poly (1-0).
