Realtors can get chance at crime education

Local Realtors can take part in a safety presentation at the

Newport Beach Police Department today.

For National Realtor Safety Week, Sunday through Saturday, the

Newport Beach Assn. of Realtors is launching a safety campaign to

help agents avoid risks on the job. The recent murder of a South Bay

real estate agent has brought more attention to the potential dangers

of the job.

A crime-prevention specialist with the Police Department will help

educate members of the Newport Beach Assn. of Realtors today on

safety measures they can take during open houses and property

showings.

For more information, call the Newport Beach Assn. of Realtors at

(949) 722-2300.

Candidates for council vent their views tonight

Voters will have a chance to get more familiar with the 12

candidates vying for the three open Costa Mesa City Council seats

tonight.

The Chamber of Commerce, the Daily Pilot and Comcast are

sponsoring a candidates’ forum at City Hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Former Mayor Peter Buffa will emcee the event with Daily Pilot

Editor Tony Dodero and Comcast Channel 3 News Producer Valerie

Mitchell asking the questions, which will not be taken from the

audience.

All 12 candidates are expected to be at the forum, Chamber

President Ed Fawcett said. Each hopeful will be given a chance to

respond to each question, but their time will be limited to one

minute, Fawcett said.

“If they want to ramble, or hold a discourse on anything, we’ll

cut them short,” Fawcett said.

The 12 candidates are: Mike Scheafer, who was appointed last year

when former Mayor Karen Robinson left to become an Orange County

Superior Court judge; incumbent Chris Steel; Planning Commissioners

Bruce Garlich, Katrina Foley and Eric Bever; former Mayor Linda

Dixon; Parks and Recreation Commissioner Mirna Burciaga; and

residents Sam Clark, Karl Ahlf, Michael Clifford, Richard Carroll and

Terry Shaw.

City Hall is at 77 Fair Drive.
