CdM trounces Cougars
Thomas Pearson, Tom Money and Jacob Murphy scored four goals each
Tuesday as Corona de Mar defeated host Capistrano Valley, 14-7, in a
nonleague season-opener.
The Sea Kings outscored the Cougars, 4-1, in the second quarter to
build an 8-4 halftime lead, then outscored the hosts, 4-2, in the
third before rolling to the win.
While Pearson (two assists and one steal), Money (three steals and
two assists) and Murphy (four steals and two assists) paced the CdM
offense, Gaston Sanford recorded nine goalie saves and three steals
for the winners.
Mike Berry (two assists) and Spencer Pirdy (seven assists and one
steal) each scored a goal for the Sea Kings, while Bryan Buhagiar had
three steals and two assists and Scott Sanford added one assist.
Corona del Mar will host Foothill on Friday.
Eagles soar past Savanna
* Chad Kunert scored five times to power Estancia High (1-0) past
visiting Savanna, 11-7, in a nonleague game Tuesday.
“Chad scored on a couple of fast breaks and from the hole,” Coach
John Carpenter said. “He played a real good game.”
The Eagles also received a solid effort from Sean Goodman and
Danny Alderete, who both registered hat tricks.
Goaltender Richard McElvenay had 10 saves.
The Eagles play Sage hill School Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Corona
del Mar pool.
Mustangs open with win
* Junior Kyle Thorsness scored four goals while Adam Douglas and
Evan Spencer each added three for the Costa Mesa High boys water polo
team, which defeated nonleague host El Modena, 10-6, in its season
opener Tuesday.
Anthony Adamowicz tallied three assists while Matt Jaroslawski
made eight saves in goal for the Mustangs, which compete in the
Western tournament beginning Friday.
Wilson tops Sailors
* Host Long Beach Wilson defeated Newport Harbor, 14-8, in a
battle of traditional powerhouses Tuesday in nonleague action at
Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. It was the season opener for both
schools.
Nate Castillo led Newport Harbor with six goals, while Clinton
Jorth had four assists. Dan Furman and Jovan Vranes each scored a
goal for the Sailors. Telford Cottam had one assist and one steal for
the Tars while teammate Carson Hill had one steal.
Newport Harbor goalie Michael Robinson recorded four saves and two
steals.
