Code Red takes second in soccer tournament

The California Futbol Club Code Red, a local girls’ under-13 soccer

team, captured second-place at the Junior United Soccer Assn. Kickoff

Tournament over Labor Day Weekend.

The squad, thanks to a relentless defense, won three pool play

matches to reach the semifinals.

In the process, Code Red only allowed one goal in their first four

matches.

They advanced to the tournament final where they were edged by the

Stampede, 1-0.

The defense was led by Tiffany Van Tress, George Demes, Danica

McGuire, Jodi Hwang and Breanne Justice.

Effectively controlling the midfield were Alli Budd, Osiris Ceja,

Rachel Pasternak and Alyssa Strickland.

Code Red’s scoring was spread between several players as Kirsten

Marony netted four goals, Rebecca Cruz contributed two and Hwang,

Erika Longoria and Alison Hensley each scored once.

Following its tournament championship run, Code Red opened its

regular season on a high note as they routed the La Habra Spirit,

11-0.

Marony opened the scoring with a goal off a Longoria assist. Her

score was quickly followed by goals from Hensley and Lauren Hanson,

the later of whom scored from outside the penalty area.

Hensley netted her second goal on another Longoria assist, who

then followed with a goal of her own on a breakaway.

Ceja finished out the half by scoring Code Red’s sixth goal.

In the second half, Demes contributed two assists and a goal,

while Breanne Justice scored a hat trick, one goal coming off a feed

by Tiffany Van Tress.

The last goal of the game came on a solo run by Ceja.

Slick passing and strong support on both offense and defense was

provided by Strickland, McGuire, Rachel Pasternak, Hwang, Budd and

Cruz.

Girls

Under-10 Division

Hot Shots 6, Goal’d Rushers 3

Katie Gainous’ early goal got the Hot Shots off in running in

their first match of the season.

They upped their lead to 4-0 at the intermission behind

consecutive goals by Kirsti Stangeland, one off a Dana Conlisk

assist, and a goal by Julia Hiserodt, who scored her first career

goal.

All three goals were scored in the second quarter.

Courtney Meyer scored her first career goal in the third period to

make it 5-0, but Lindsay Archer answered by scoring the first goal of

the match for the Goal’d Rushers.

Archer drilled two more goals in the fourth quarter and Stangeland

scored her third goal of the match to complete the scoring.

Simone Corkett, Grace Khoury, Briana Kutinsky, Danielle Kutinsky

and Ashley Yount also contributed to the Hot Shots victory.

Under-12 Division

Beach Babes 1, HB Highlighters 0

Lindsay Distler’s second quarter goal proved to be all the Beach

Babes would need as they prevailed in an evenly-played match.

Distler’s goal came off an Allison Baskin feed.

Sloan Turner and Spencer Wayne shared goaltending duties for the

HB Highlighters and Melissa Khoury and Nicole Brashears teamed in

goal for the Beach Babes.

In girls softball action:

South Huntington Beach wins tourney title

The South Huntington Beach Breakers, a girls’ under-10 team, had

an undefeated run in winning the Cypress Labor Day Softball

Tournament.

Playing in triple digit temperatures, the Breakers began the

tournament with impressive wins over Long Beach (14-2) and Los

Alamitos (7-1).

Taking the mound in the two wins was Sammy Cordova and Taylor

Dennison.

Breaker bats were as hot as the weather, as Nicole Zapotoczny and

Lauren Deats hit grand slams, Jessica Plaza tripled among two hits

and Cordova, Dennison, Sarah Wood, Lindsay Stovall, Madeline Moore,

Rachel LoGrasso, Danielle Bonham, Carissa Sherman and Amber Cazares

contributed key hits.

South Huntington Beach came back to defeat West Garden Grove and

Cypress to reach the title game.

The Breakers did it the hard way against the host team, Cypress,

as they rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the bottom of the sixth to pull

out a 4-3 victory.

A two-out rally in the sixth by Dennison and Cordova brought the

Breakers into a 2-2 tie and forced an international tiebreaker

situation.

Cypress went ahead, 3-2, in the top of the seventh and South

Huntington Beach, needing two runs in the bottom-half of the frame to

win the game, did just that as Deats’ RBI single scored Danielle

Bonham to tie the game and Zapotoczny singled home the winning run

with bases loaded.

In the championship final, the Breakers won another international

tiebreaker by defeating a second team from Los Alamitos, 6-4.

The teams were tied at 4-4 through six innings.

In the tiebreaker, Deats’ two-RBI single proved lifted the

Breakers to the title.

The Breakers got strong defensive games from right fielder

LoGrasso and Wood and Jessica Plaza behind the plate.

In Pop Warner Football action:

Mitey Mite Chargers fall to Santa Margarita

The Huntington Beach Mitey Mite Division Chargers dropped their

season opener to Santa Margarita, 31-6.

The Chargers scored their lone touchdown on an 80-yard romp by

Steve Hernandez.
