Oiler netters open season with win over Irvine
Freshman Jennifer Heumann swept at No. 2 singles and the Huntington
Beach High girls’ tennis team successfully launched its 2004 season
with a 14-4 nonleague victory over visiting Irvine High.
Another freshman, Monica Stupaczuk, also won her two matches in
impressive fashion at No. 3 singles.
Kelly Wong, substituting for Stupaczuk, posted a 6-0 win to
complete a sweep at No. 3 singles.
Lauren Pascoe, the Oilers’ No. 1 doubles player, won her only set,
6-0.
Amy Kaufman and Stacy Kaufman posted a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles
for Huntington and Wong teamed with Elaine Nguyen at No. 2 doubles to
win twice.
In a similar trade that took place at No. 3 singles, Stupaczuk
substituted for Wong at No. 2 doubles and she and Nguyen earned a 6-0
win to complete a sweep there.
At No. 3 doubles, Christina Le and Jenny Le earned two victories.
In girls’ volleyball, host Ocean View was a 25-12, 25-12, 25-21 winner over Cypress.
Jeniece Womack had 13 kills and Hayley Hanson recorded 25 assists
for the Seahawks.
Edison opened its season with a 25-14, 25-15, 25-12 sweep of
visiting Foothill. The Chargers’ Colleen Burke had 10 kills.
In another season opener, Huntington defeated visiting Lakewood,
25-22, 19-25, 25-11, 25-16.
In boys’ water polo, Edison was an 8-5 winner over Saddleback at
the Golden West College pool.
Travis Bee netted four goals and assisted two other scores to lead
the Chargers.
In girls’ golf, Marina’s Jennifer Osborn earned medalist honors
with a 3-under 68 and Edison’s Jennie Lee was in second-place with
even par 71 at the Shootout at Strawberry Farms Golf Course in
Irvine, which was hosted by University High.
Alex Calvillo and Amber Stoner tied for medalist honors with a 44
as Edison topped Estancia, 234-251, at Mesa Linda Golf Course.
