High school boy stabbed on campus

A Corona del Mar High School student was injured Monday in an
apparent stabbing on the school’s campus.
The boy, whose name was not released, has a three-inch cut on his
cheek from the incident, which happened at about 11:45 a.m. Monday,
Newport Beach Police Sgt. Steve Shulman said.
The student received stitches but appeared to be in good
condition, Shulman said.
Police have no one in custody in connection with the incident,
which is under investigation.
“Detectives are trying to verify the victim’s story,” Shulman
said. “There’s no question that the victim was injured. They are
questioning how it occurred.”
Police would not reveal the student’s age or grade. Police believe
the incident took place in a bathroom but did not know what weapon
was used.
School officials could not be reached for comment late Wednesday.
Newport-Mesa Unified School District spokeswoman Jane Garland
confirmed that the incident did occur on campus. Police are handling
the investigation, she said.
“At the moment, we won’t say anything until the police
investigation is complete,” Garland said. “But it is my understanding
that the student will be fine.”
The school is safe despite the incident, Garland said. School
officials made an announcement to students, telling them what had
happened, she said.
Police believe this is an isolated incident.
“We have no reason to believe that other students are in jeopardy
of being injured,” Shulman said.
