Sea Kings clip Eagles’ wings

The Corona del Mar High’s girls golf team made history with a 230-235

nonleague triumph over host Santa Margarita Wednesday at the par-36

Dove Canyon Country Club.

The Sea Kings scored their first win against the perennially

strong Eagles since girls golf became a CIF sanctioned sport in 1998,

CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said.

Katie Albright led the Sea Kings (1-0) with a 43 followed by Katie

McKitterick (45), Michelle Drucker (46), Caitlin McDonald (47) and

Jonna Kim (49).

Sailors win opener

* GOLF: The Newport Harbor High girls golf team started its season

on a winning note, scoring a 245-269 nonleague victory over visiting

Edison Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.

Junior Natalie Draganza, the two-time defending Sea View League

individual champion, led the Sailors with an 8-over-par 44 followed

by Kayleigh Horn (48), Ashley Jacobs (51), Kendall Horn (56) and Erin

Callahan (56).

Chen sparks Sage Hill

* GOLF: Freshman Justine Chen shot a 2-over-par 38 to earn

medalist honors and lift Sage Hill School to a 250-278 Golden West

League victory over Ocean View Wednesday at Strawberry Farms Golf

Club in Irvine.

Sophomore Emma Koh followed Chen, who tallied two birdies, with a

48 while Natalie Kraft (50), Madison Gillis (54) and Kimberly

Venditozzi (60) all scored for Sage Hill (2-0).

‘Eaters tie school record

* VOLLEYBALL: The UC Irvine women’s volleyball team tied for the

best start in the program’s history with its seventh win to open the

season, the latest a 30-20, 30-21, 30-20 victory over visiting Cal

State Fullerton at Crawford Court.

Senior outside hitter Kelly Wing tallied a match-high 21 kills to

lead the Anteaters, who matched the start of the 1981 UCI squad.

Senior Sami Cash and sophomore Trisha White each slammed 10 kills for

the victors.

Setter Ashlie Hain had 49 assists and five kills.

Peninsula edges CdM

* TENNIS: Visiting Corona del Mar claimed five of nine singles

sets, but Peninsula took six of nine in doubles to earn a 10-8

nonleague girls tennis victory Wednesday in a matchup of programs

that have combined for 19 CIF Southern Section titles.

Sophomores Jill Damion and Jillian Braverman each took two of

three singles sets for the Sea Kings (2-1), while the doubles duo of

Hayley Young and Rachael Miller also claimed two victories. Braverman

is 8-1 in singles this season.

The Sea Kings held a 4-2 lead after the first round and the teams

were tied at 6 heading into the third and final round.

Doubles -- H. Young-Miller (CdM) def. Schweyer-Weber, 6-2, lost to Aston-Chen, 2-6, def. Jackson-Liu, 6-1; M. Young-Norman (CdM) lost, 1-6, 0-6, 4-6; Steele-Atkins (CdM) lost, 3-6, 3-6, won, 6-3.

Coast sweeps foe

* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore outside hitter Donka Drozd posted a

season-high 15 kills to lead the Orange Coast College women’s

volleyball team to a 30-24, 30-21, 30-19 victory over visiting San

Diego City in nonconference action Wednesday.

Orange Coast (3-0) plays in the Santa Ana tournament on Saturday.

Lions win in overtime

* SOCCER: Sophomore Stacia Hoover’s overtime goal lifted the

Vanguard University women’s soccer team to a 2-1 victory over host La

Verne Wednesday. Heather Tape scored the other goal for the Lions

(3-2-1).
