Breakers start season with two victories

The Newport Breakers, an AYSO Region 97 girls under-14 club soccer

team, started out the league season with two wins as the season began

Saturday.

Scoring in both games were Sara Gomez, Lauren de Voy and Bailey

Johnson. Cayla and Shelby Porter, Alex Griggs, and Christina Cooley

all played strong defense. Alice Cope, Shannon Rohan, Katy Storch and

Malia Hohl led an aggressive offense while Stephanie Castor and

Stephanie Nealy made key stops in goal.

In boys under-16 play:

* Costa Mesa 3, Newport 2:

Santiago Salcedo scored both Newport goals while Sergio Rodriguez

and Brian Siemonsma each added assists.

Tommy Olson made four key saves in goal to help keep Newport

close. Newport took a 2-1 lead with strong defensive efforts from

Jeremy Lewis, Gary Guerrero, Robert Guy, Dillon Giedt, and Alex

Flores. Midfielders Chris Lewis, P.J. Baca, and Sergio Rodriguez

stopped several Costa Mesa attacks. Morgan Webster and Seth Janica

kept constant pressure on the Costa Mesa defense.

* San Juan Capistrano 5, Newport 0:

Despite allowing five goals, Newport still played strong defense.

Olson made four saves in goal while Lewis and Justin Whisler turned

away numerous San Juan threats. Giedt and Flores added to the defense

while the midfield was controlled by Chris Lewis, Janica and Baca.

Guy and Rodriguez made strong passes while Guerrero, Santiago

Salcedo, Webster and Brian Siemonsma all had a few breakaway chances.

In girls under-12 action:

* Newport Beach 2, Costa Mesa 1:

Midfielder Erika Page caused much pressure on Costa Mesa. Ava

Nelson scored the first of two goals off a header from Megan Case.

Nelson’s second goal came off a pass from Nicole Baker.

Costa Mesa kept it close until the end but was turned away by

Emily Boone, Lauren D’Ippolito and Kathryn Zimmermann. Newport’s

sweeper, Meghan Nance, made a slide tackle to prevent the potential

game-tying goal. Midfielders Christie Ohlhaver and Brianna Truxton,

along with Sarah Buckingham and Kelly Rorden, all played well.

In girls under-11 action:

* Newport 2, Rancho Santa Margarita 0:

Newport goalkeeper Meaghan Kay blocked several hard shots in the

first half while Molly Anderson and Madison Wooters each scored goals

in the shutout. Ali Hayes added an assist while defenders Allison

Schelin, Madison Grant and Delaney Bell all contributed to the

victory.

In girls under-14 action:

* Purplicious 5, Cookie Monsters 1:

Brianne Schelin scored the Cookie Monsters’ goal while teammates

Shay Brown and Haley Willard each played strong in goal.

Lindsay Ricker, Katya Zangeneh, Bianca Nasser, Patty Moddelmog,

and Emily Rosales all helped on defense while Whitney Beauchamp and

Alexa Reasoner created scoring chances.

In girls under-12 action:

* Breakers 1, Trojanettes 0:

Bridget Lyons scored the game’s lone goal on assists from

Christina Young and Allie Pantoskey early in the second half.

Robin Young, Kathryn Waller, Rebecca Arnold, Brandy Flemming,

Tempest Blaine and Celina Boldt kept the ball in Trojannettes

territory for most of the first half. The Breakers had seven shots,

but goalkeeper Tatum Norton came up with key stops.

Tayler Morgan provided strong kicks up field.

The Trojanettes were led by Norton, Maddie Sheperd, Lauren

Bartolic, Carly Pickett and Kasey Thompson.

In girls under-10 action:

* Surf Chicks 2, Green Chihuahuas 1:

Seneca Jakosky scored two goals to lead the Surf Chicks to their

first victory. Brinley Siemonsma, Shannon Henderson and Sara Cluck

all anchored the Surf Chicks’ defense.

* Patriots 2, Pink Pussycats 1:

The Pink Pussycats came out strong with Katie Reed scoring first

off an assist from Andria Spears. Casey Duckworth had a number of

saves at goal to hold the Patriots in the first quarter. Sarah

Whitney and Jenna Jarvis anchored the defense while Meghan Vance had

a shot. Courtney Buck booted several shots against a strong Patriots’

goalkeeper.

* Page Keys and Madison Jabara each scored goals for the Rip

Curls, which played to a 2-2 tie.

Nikki Walsh, Samantha Singer, Catherine Connelly and Emma Howard

sparkled defensively.

In boys under-10 action:

* Avalanche 5, Trojans 0: Nic Sargeant’s hat trick powered the

Avalanche to the victory. Gage Coffelt and Parker Martinez added

single goals while Joey Gregory and Coffelt each added assists.

Chris Buchanan, Kevin Rakestraw and Scott Grew had saves while in

goal. Gordon Lewis and Rory Fleming provided strong midfield play.

Sam Jones and Riley Ricker kept up the offensive pressure.

* Raiders 4, Red Bulls 1:

Griffin Leggett scored all three of his goals in the first half

while Connor Leggett added a single score to lead the Raiders to

victory.

Bryan Shollin, Keaton Hirsch and Blake Smith kept up the offensive

pressure while Grant Moore handled the midfield. Sweeper Dylan Roe,

along with Charlie Barber and Cameron Candelaria, anchored the

defense.

Mason Powers scored the Red Bulls’ goal on an assist from

Massisimo Navaretta. Zachary Diamond and Harrison Nelson each played

strong defense while Nick Duehring and Cameron Geehr added to the

effort.

* Funky Monkeys 4, Tiger Sharks 1:

Sean Cox scored two goals while Ellery Sever and True Tamplin each

scored one goal to lead the Funky Monkeys. Cox was also strong in

goal.

Taylor Parks, Cole Chapin and Ian Batstone passed well to go with

productive offense from Trevor Conway, Michael Reo and Brandon Beck.

Ian Mac Innis and Kolby Pearson maintained constant defensive

pressure against the Tiger Sharks.

In girls under-8 action:

* Jenna Lincolnand and Sophia Jeffries each scored goals for the

Watermelons in their opener against the Green Geckos.

The Geckos’ Chelsea Baker, Megan Mirabel, Alyssa Rice, Delanie

Gastineau, Alex Vasquez, Erica Nilsson, Tabitha Garry and McKenzie

kept the score close.

* Logan Grove, Mallory Gyulay each scored a goal and played strong

defense against the Blue Dolphins.

Gabby Mangano and Olivia Sever were strong on both sides for the

Panthers. Hailey Mahaffey and Sabrina Sanchez held off an aggressive

Dolphin offense while Amanda Dupont led the effort in goal. Anna

Hancock showed her versatility at sweeper.

In girls under-7 action:

* Samantha Falaso and Peyton Groves each scored goals for the

Green Speckled Gators against the Blue Surfer Girls.

The Gators’ offense was led by Jacqui DeFeo, Megan Keys and Paige

Tamblyn. Defensively, the Gators’ Emma Vujnovich and Sarah Boese held

off attacks.

In boys under-7 action:

* Michael Clark, Chase Braun and Matthew Brodie each scored goals

to lead the Trojans in their game against the Dragons.

Sam Launder, Luis Mora and Brodie each tallied assists while Mikey

Plecas and Eddie Guzman showed strong skills on both offense and

defense. Trojan goalies Cooper Hendrix and Jack Beeker anchored the

defense.

* Volcano Dragons vs. Blue Marlins

Devon Patterson and Christian Secor each scored goals to lead the

Volcano Dragons against the Blue Marlins.

Ethan Buggeln added an assist.

* The Sun Devils and Red Lazers who had just seven players, each

played a strong match.

The Sun Devils were led by Alex Borlin, Christopher Huntley and

Jack McKasson while the defense of Wilson Lubeck and Trevor Neighbors

limited the Red Lazers. Reid Rutter, Jack Cornuke, Ryan Young and Sam

Skinner all played in goal for the first time.

* Jeremiah Sheldon’s four goals led the Salty Sea Dawgs in their

opener. Jake Dennis added two goals while Andrew Laidlaw and Jack

Rapillo tallied single scores. Kingston McCarthy added an assist .

Sean Korkmaz, Jordan Teisan and Pete Harano led the Dawgs’ defense

while Jake Weyrich also provided a spark.

* The Green Hornets booted several shots and added staunch

defense. Goalkeepers Garett Kerley and Mitchell Steinke each made

more than 10 saves while Jacob McKelvy and Hunter White both stopped

dozens of advances. Cole Brockhoff, Adam Schultz and Jake McIntyre

covered the whole field. Adam Fulmizi and Griffen Gout each had many

touches.

In girls under-6 action:

* Flamingos vs Pink Dolphins

Erika Ellis, McKenzie Porteous and Julia Ackerman and Mandy Tapfer

each scored multiple goals to lead the Flamingos against the Pink

Dolphins.

Paige Fults earned Defensive Player of the Game honors.

* Taylor Craig, Melelani Falasco, Lauren Vissman and Danielle

Wilson all scored goals to help lead the Blue Sharks against the

Tidal Waves.

Lily Woodall maneuvers also bolstered ball movement.

In boys under-6 play:

* The Purple Dragons received several strong performances in their

opener against the Green Lizards from Max and Ben Toffel, Barron

Banta, Nic Rimlinger and Dominic Loftus.

* Connor Lindenstadt, Chandler Hunt, Andrew Stoneman and Jacob

Duehring all scored goals for the Riding Giants. Jake Smith and

Matthew Torres played strong defense and helped set up goals.

Jack McClintock scored two goals and added an assist for the

Orange Cheetahs in their season opener.

Chandler Siemonsma added an assist while Ashe Deering and Joshua

Jenkins and Lucas Hodges all showed strong ball-handling skills.

Jon Hodges and James Hodges played each blocked several shots.

In girls under-5 play:

* Hannah Darrow and Hannah Mathisrud each scored goals for the

Yellow Blueberries against the Blueberries.

Melinda Stevens kept the heat on the Blueberries’ defense while

Zoe DeVine and Kera Newland added strong kicks.

* Kate LaGrandeur and Claire Covina each scored goals to pace the

Pink Hearts against the Pink Alligators.

Holly Nance and Sidney Palmer held off many Alligator scoring

chances while Ashley Young hustled.

In boys under-5 play:

* Ben Zehnder led the Green Bulldogs with five goals while

teammate Joe Skinner added three for the Green Bulldogs against the

Stingrays.

Pasha Dastmalchi, Joshua Gehlke and Cameron Weiss each scored

goals for the Stingrays. Billy Shannon added two goals to go with a

single score by Jack Berman for the Bulldogs.

Eann McKasson assisted on several Bulldog goals.

Jagger Mitchell and Jake Edler held off many Bulldog scoring

chances while Jake Bashore hustled on both sides of the field.
