Breaker girls win first two

The Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball team got its season off to a

hot start by defeating Dana Hills and Sage Hill in a pair of home

matches at Dugger Gymnasium.

In their season opener, the Breakers swept Dana Hills, 25-13,

25-21, 26-24.

Stephanie Parnell had 17 kills -- including eight in the second

game -- eight digs and three service aces in the match.

Dana Hutchinson had 15 kills and five digs, Joy Henderson had

eight digs and three aces and Paige Obradovich recorded 26 setting

assists.

Tuesday night, Laguna Beach came back from an 0-1 deficit in games

to down Sage Hill 23-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.

Hutchinson led the Breakers with 28 kills and Darnall posted 22

kills.

Obradovich had 41 assists.

Cat Dailey led the Lighting, who were playing their season opener,

with 13 kills and three aces.

In girls tennis, Laguna edged host Sage Hill, 10-8, at Balboa Bay

Racquet Club.

It was the season opener for both schools.

Claire Reitsch and Lauren Thigpen each won two of three at No. 1

and No. 2 singles, respectively, and Kellie Ammerman and Kim Ochwat

accomplished the same at No. 1 doubles for the Breakers.

In boys’ water polo, Laguna launched its season Tuesday with an

11-6 win at La Habra.

The Breakers led 3-2 after one period and 7-4 at the half and went

on to outscore the Highlanders, 4-2, in the second half.

Senior driver Ryan Fair and junior center Mike Dick tied for

match-high scoring honors with four goals apiece.

Seniors Trevor and Jeremy Frimond each scored twice to complete

Laguna’s scoring.

Senior Bret Burge recorded 12 saves.

In girls’ cross country, Laguna runners Kat Gordon and Alex

Crawley were Laguna’s top finishers at the Fastback Shootout at Mount

San Antonio College in Walnut.

Gordon, a senior, posted the sixth fastest time (12:37) in the

senior division while Crawley, a sophomore, had the fifth fastest

time (12:42) for a sophomore, in the meet’s three-year history,

Laguna coach Earl Towner said.

Both runners finished third in their respective division and

earned a Sheriff medal.

In boys’ cross country, sophomore Max Mullender’s time of 10:46,

good for fourth-place, was the top time and finish turned in by

Laguna at the Fastback Shootout.
