Newport Harbor High and Corona del Mar’s girls volleyball teams each

won their first two matches of the 58-team Dave Mohs tournament

Friday.

The Sailors, playing at home, downed Royal, 25-21, 25-21, before defeating Valencia of Valencia in the nightcap, 18-25, 25-23, 15-4.

CdM downed El Toro, 25-22, 25-20, while earning a 25-11, 25-22

victory over Temescal Canyon in matches at Edison.

Senior outside hitter Kiley Hall led the Tars with 25 kills in two

matches while senior setter Taryn Tarnutzer added 11 kills.

Senior Lindsey Ensign led the Sea Kings with six kills against El

Toro while senior teammate Jordan Smith added four kills and 10 digs.

Traci Lawson tallied 10 assists and Kelly Christian added two aces.

Dailey dials in for Sage

* VOLLEYBALL: Junior Cat Dailey slammed 23 kills to lead the

visiting Sage Hill School girls volleyball team to a 22-25, 25-23,

25-19, 25-27, 15-5 nonleague victory over Calvary Chapel of Downey

Friday. Haywood Wright added 12 kills and eight blocks while Kelsey

Lawler tallied 61 assists for the Lightning (1-1).

Sound win for Sailors

* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High’s girls tennis team won all nine

doubles sets and cruised to a 15-3 nonleague win over host Palm

Springs Friday.

Sophomore Chrissy Schwartz added three wins in singles, losing

just three games, for Newport (3-1) while teammates Brittany Nelson

and Melissa Chinn scored 7-5, 6-0, 6-0, victories in their doubles

sets, playing in 103-degree heat, Coach Fletcher Olson said.

Mustangs romp, 24-0

* WATER POLO: Costa Mesa High’s boys water polo team scored 16

goals in the third and fourth periods en route to a 24-0 victory over

Kennedy on the opening day of the Western tournament at Kennedy.

Kyle Thorsness led the victors with nine goals while Adam Douglas

tallied six. John Roche and Luke Yellin added four and two scores,

respectively, while Evan Spencer, Chris Medina and Nick Fisk each

added one goal. Goalkeeper Matt Jaroslawski made five saves.

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Hilary Larson recorded a team-high 12 kills

and senior Courtney Fletcher had six service aces as the host

Estancia High girls volleyball team Friday swept Los Amigos, 25-23,

25-23, 25-21. Estancia improved to 1-2 while Los Amigos fell to 2-2.

VU’s Hess scores twice

* SOCCER: Matt Hess scored two goals in the second half as the

Vanguard University men’s soccer team defeated host Dominican, 4-0,

in nonleague action Friday in San Rafael.

Jarrett Borego scored in the 62nd minute to give VU a 1-0 lead,

then Hess scored in the 66th and 87th minutes, before David McAulay

capped the scoring in the 90th minute.

Hutton notches hat trick

* SOCCER: Sophomore Heather Hutton recorded a hat trick for the

Vanguard University women’s soccer team Friday night as the host

Lions defeated Texas A&M; International, 5-0, in a nonconference

match.

Vanguard wins a pair

* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University opened the Pacific Coast Classic

with two victories Friday at Pomona-Pitzer College, defeating

Chapman, 30-17, 30-20, 30-23, as VU’s Sevryn Demos had 22 digs and

Jaclyn Lee 16 kills.

In the second match, the Lions (14-4), who have already surpassed

last year’s win total, swept Whittier, 30-25, 30-14, 30-15.

Ronquillo ignites Coast

* SOCCER: Sophomore forward Sarah Ronquillo scored twice and added

an assist as the Orange Coast College women’s soccer team defeated

visiting Fullerton, 5-0, in Orange Empire Conference action Friday.

Pirates post two wins

* WATER POLO: Orange Coast College’s women’s water polo team

advanced to the championship bracket of the nine-team Chaffey

tournament with two victories Friday.

The Pirates (5-1) earned an 18-1 victory over College of the

Canyons and then downed Mt. San Antonio, 9-7.

Chargers dodge Lightning

* TENNIS: Host El Toro High tallied seven of nine doubles

victories and turned away Sage Hill School, 10-8, in a nonleague

girls tennis match Friday.

Stephanie Langer, Sarah Geocaris and Alle Hsu each took two of

three singles sets for the Lightning (2-2), who are still

experimenting with doubles combinations. El Toro improved to 2-0.

* WATER POLO: Host Corona del Mar lost to Foothill, 12-9, in a

nonleague boys water polo match Friday.

CdM’s Thomas Pearson led the way with five goals, including two

four-meter shots, while teammates Kyle Hirsh, Tom Money, Spencer

Pirdy and Jacob Murphy scored single goals. Bryan Buhagiar had one

steal for the Sea Kings (1-1).

Anteater women fall

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine women’s soccer team lost to No. 14 Texas

A&M;, 3-0, at the Aggie Soccer Complex in College Station.

The Aggies scored in the ninth minute of the game with a header by

Ashlee Pistorius off a corner kick by Laura Probst at 8:42 and never

looked back. UCI fell to 3-3-1.

Stanford blanks UCI

* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team lost, 2-0, to No. 8

Stanford (4-0-1) at the Titan Classic Friday at Cal State Fullerton.

The Cardinal struck quickly with a goal by Darren Fernandez 27

seconds into the match off an assist by Michael Brown. Fernandez put

the game out of reach as he knocked the ball across the goal past UCI

goalie Ryan Mathy at 85:12.
