JIM DE BOOM

The first Orange County Children’s Book Festival is being held from

9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Orange Coast College. Children’s

authors, book illustrators, panel presentations, storytellers and

much more will be there. It is hoped this it the first of what will

be an annual event to encourage reading and the love of books.

Additionally, one high school volunteer will be collecting new and

used children’s books for needy schools as part of her project for

Girl Scouts. There will be a collection area at the festival.

The job of finding the festival volunteers has fallen upon the

shoulders of former school administrator and now super volunteer

Scott Paulsen. According to Paulsen, the volunteers will be greeting

authors and escorting them to the “green room;” selling food, sodas

and shirts; serving as information guides; and performing all kinds

of other jobs throughout the day. Volunteers will be served water and

will receive a T-shirt for their work time.

On Saturday, volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to noon, noon to 3

p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. for set up. On Sunday, when the need is

greatest, they will work three-hour, 15-minute shifts. Some

volunteers will start at 6 a.m. and some will stay after 4:30 p.m.

for cleanup.

This is a nonprofit activity, and you can visit the website at

https://www.

e-mail address, which can be faxed to (949) 644-2088 or called in by

phone to (949) 644-5578.

PROPOSITION ANALYSIS

The key propositions on the November ballot will be the focus of

the Orange County Coast Assn.’s luncheon on Oct. 24 at the Newport

Dunes Resort. Adam Probolsky, president of Probolsky Research, will

discuss the pros, cons and latest polling on key propositions on the

ballot, according to association president Peer Swan.

This is a networking luncheon for OCCA members; elected officials;

city, business and community leaders; and members from Seal Beach to

San Clemente, according to Swan, a Newport Coast resident and member

of the Irvine Ranch Water District Board.

The day begins at 11:30 a.m. with networking time, a noon

luncheon, the program at 12:45 and adjournment by 1:30 p.m. The cost

for the lunch is $20 for OCCA members, $22 for nonmembers, and

reservations can be made by calling (714) 921-8665, ext. 3, by

Wednesday.

WORTH REPEATING

From the Thought for Today, provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport

Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “Flatter me, and I may not believe

you. Criticize me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not

forgive you. Encourage me, and I will not forget you.”
