NEWPORT BEACH

A fishy story awash on the beach

Millions of sardines washed up on the beach between 13th and 24th

streets Thursday night. City officials hauled about three tons of

fish from the beach to the county landfill Friday. The event was

probably a direct effect of southern storms, which are causing

whirlwind changes in water temperatures and currents which may be

dragging toxic plankton or other harmful food supply into local

waters, experts said.

* The apparent stabbing of a boy in a Corona del Mar High School

bathroom Monday has many students and parents asking questions about

the incident.

Newport Beach Police said that the boy suffered a cut on his face

that required stitches, but he is recovering. Little information has

been released while detectives are verifying the boy’s story and

investigating the incident, but school district officials insist the

campus is safe.
