Mustangs claim Western crown

Kyle Thorsness of Costa Mesa High scored eight goals in two games and

was named Most Valuable Player of the Western boys water polo

tournament Saturday as the Mustangs defeated Bell Gardens, 15-6, in

the championship game.

Thorsness scored four goals against Rancho Alamitos in the

semifinals, a 17-7 Mesa win, before the Mustangs improved to 4-1

under first-year coach and athletic director Tim Postiff with a

victory over Bell Gardens.

Mesa’s Anthony Adanowicz and Evan Spencer scored five goals each

in the two games, including three each against Bell Gardens, while

John Roche added three scores in the title match. Goalie Matt

Jaroslawski recorded eight saves for Mesa in the semifinal and six in

the final.

Coast wins tournament

* VOLLEYBALL: Orange Coast College’s women’s volleyball team

defeated Cerritos, 30-24, in the championship match of the Santa Ana

tournament Saturday as the Pirates’ Melissa Zapiain was named

tournament Most Valuable Player.

Zapiain switched back and forth from outside hitter to middle

blocker throughout the day as Orange Coast (3-0) beat San Diego City

in the quarterfinals, 30-22, and Eastern Utah in the semifinals,

30-20.

CdM reaches title match

* VOLLEYBALL: Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team reached

the championship match of the Dave Mohs tournament with an upset

victory over Esperanza, 13-25, 25-20, 15-13, in the semifinals

Saturday at Edison.

The Sea Kings (7-1) will face host Edison at 7 p.m. Monday for the

tournament title.

Corona del Mar advanced with a 25-23, 25-12 win over Lakewood in

pool play, then beat El Dorado, 25-15, 26-24, in the first round of

the championship bracket, before topping San Clemente, 25-20, 22-25,

15-11, in the quarterfinals.

Jordan Smith had 49 digs and 32 kills on the day for CdM while

Lindsey Ensign had 30 kills and seven blocks.

CdM sophomore setter Kelly Christian smashedt her head on the

hardwood floor in the semifinal win and was rushed to Hoag Hospital,

where she received 18 stitches over her right eyebrow. She had 27

assists before leaving the match.

Breanne Odgen (21 digs), Traci Lawson (49 assists and six service

aces) and Britta Nielsen contributed to the four Sea King triumphs.

* In other Dave Mohs tournament action, Mission Viejo defeated

Newport Harbor, 25-20, 18-25, 15-12, in pool play. The Sailors

followed with 25-21 win over Valencia in a one-game playoff, then

lost to Tesoro, 25-21, 19-25, 15-13, in the first round of the

championship bracket.

The Sailors’ Kiley Hall had eights kills each against Mission

Viejo and Tesoro.

Tars handle Coronado

* WATER POLO: Four players scored three goals to help the Newport

Harbor High boys water polo team defeat visiting Coronado, 16-7,

Saturday.

Carson Hill, Jovan Vranes, Clinton Jorth and Nate Castillo all

tallied three times for the winners, who received six saves from

Michael Robinson.

Lions sizzle at Pomona

* VOLLEYBALL: Vanguard University’s women’s volleyball team

finished the Pacific Coast Classic 4-0 after beating host

Pomona-Pitzer, 30-18, 30-20, 30-24, and Claremont Mudd-Scripps,

30-19, 30-19, 30-24.

The Lions (16-4) are off to their best start in history.

Anteaters split two games

* WATER POLO: UC Irvine’s men’s water polo team split a pair of

games Saturday in the Southern California tournament at USC.

In the Anteaters’ first game, junior Dreason Barry scored four

goals to propel UCI past Pacific, 13-4. Dan Noon and Rick Merlo added

three while goalie Joe Wynne recorded 14 saves.

In the nightcap, UCI was edged by No. 4 Cal, 7-6. The Golden Bears

(7-0) led, 5-1, at halftime before the Anteaters mounted a

second-half comeback led by Merlo’s three goals to get UCI close. The

Anteaters face UC Santa Barbara at 8 a.m. today.

UCI’s Sapp places fifth

* GOLF: The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished 13th out of 30

teams in the Gold Rush Classic Saturday at the SCPGA

Champions/Legends courses in Calimesa. The Anteaters finished with a

two-day total of 882 over 54 holes.

UCI freshman Garrett Sapp earned his second straight top-five

finish, placing fifth at 5-under 211 (70-69-72).

Coast doubles at Cuesta

* CROSS COUNTRY: Orange Coast College’s men’s and women’s cross

country teams each claimed victories in their respective races in the

Cuesta invitational in San Luis Obispo Friday.

The Coast women won the 5K race with 52 points while Riverside

finished in second with 85. The Coast men scored 54 points in their

four-mile race to finish 39 points ahead of second-place

Southwestern. Coast’s Jose Casillas (21:22) and Humberto Rojas

(21:48) finished second and third, respectively, in the men’s race.
