Decision on field banners delayed

No decision was made Monday as expected regarding a law requiring

athletic teams to get permits to hang sponsorship banners on public

Costa Mesa ball fields and regulating banners’ display.

Libby Cowan, who’s been working closely with staff members to

refine banner regulations, was absent from the City Council meeting,

prompting members to delay the item until the next meeting.

The law is in response to complaints from the Mesa Verde Villa

Homeowners Assn. that banners at nearby California Elementary and

TeWinkle Intermediate schools cause blight.

United Way sports event raises $300,000

The event brought together 32 real estate industry teams with 250

participants. Teams engaged in fierce competition in basketball,

volleyball, swimming and kayak relays.

Lowe Enterprises took first place, with Arden Realty taking a

close second. The fundraiser was held by Buchanan Street Partners.

Fairgrounds car show cruises for a cure

A car show, billed as the world’s largest single-day car show,

will be held at the Orange County Fairgrounds Saturday, with proceeds

going to prostate cancer research.

Cruisin’ For A Cure, a nonprofit organization, is putting on the

show from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Free PSA tests, which indicate if there is a possibility of

prostate cancer, will be available at the show. All participants must

make their entry checks out to the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center, so the

proceeds go directly to cancer research.

Admission is $10. For more information, call (949) 588-8777.
