Sage Hill outduels cross country foes

Sage Hill School won three out of four matchups Tuesday against

Academy League foes St. Margaret’s and Capistrano Valley Christian on

the three-mile Salt Creek course.

The Lightning boys (3-0, 2-0 in league) edged out St. Margaret’s,

26-29, and easily defeated Capo Valley Christian, 18-45.

The girls (2-1, 1-1) beat Capo Valley Christian, 15-50, but lost

to St. Margaret’s, 19-42.

The boys were paced by first- and second-place finishes by Mike

Voge (17:09) and Zach Chandy (17:24), respectively. Rounding out the

top five were Connor Rose (seventh at 18:28), Tim Lesler (eighth at

19:04) and David Pakard (11th at 20:15).

Sage Hill’s Katie McKeon (21:33) was the second overall girls

finisher at the tri-meet. Mollie McGann (seventh at 23:00), Erica

Faris (10th at 23:54), Iral Brito (13th at 25:05) and Sara Montezami

(15th at 26:01) were the other top finishers for the Lightning.

The Sage Hill boys and girls will race Saturday in the Dana Hills

invitational at noon.

Sea Kings set scoring mark

* GOLF: The Corona del Mar High girls golf team set a school

record for lowest combined team score Tuesday, downing visiting Santa

Margarita, 212-236, in a nonleague match at Newport Beach Country

Club.

The Sea Kings (3-0) shot seven strokes less than the prior mark of

219 set last season and downed the Eagles (3-2) for the second time

in a week, CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said.

Katie McKitterick earned medalist honors with a 39 followed by

Caitlin McDonald’s 41 for CdM. Teammates Katie Albright and Maggie

Nelson each shot 43 while Michelle Drucker and Michelle Albrecht both

carded 46s. One 46 was thrown out.

The Sea Kings host Aliso Niguel in a nonleague match at 2:30 p.m.

today at Newport Beach Country Club.

Sailors blank Chaminade

* FIELD HOCKEY: Sasha Grumman scored on a cross from Jenny Taylor

and the Newport Harbor High field hockey team made it stand up for a

1-0 nonleague victory over host Chaminade Tuesday.

The Sailors forced 20 corners and Darci Pennington added

aggressive defense, Newport Coach Kristy Cross said.

Mustangs roll to victory

* WATER POLO: Costa Mesa High’s boys water polo team opened up

Golden West League action with a decisive 21-1 victory over Westminster at the Estancia pool Tuesday.

Adam Douglas and Evan Spencer gave Mesa (5-1 overall, 1-0) a 2-0

lead in the first quarter when the Lions scored to cut the deficit in

half. That’s as close as Westminster (5-5 overall) would get, as

Douglas scored on a six-on-five situation.

Douglas finished with eight goals, Kyle Thorness had four and John

Roche chipped in three scores.

The Mustangs held a 12-1 lead at the half, and 18-1 by third

quarter’s end.

Goaltender Matt Jaroslawski had nine saves for Costa Mesa, who

play at Laguna Beach at 3 p.m. today.

Kunert powers Eagles

* WATER POLO: Chad Kunert scored seven goals to lead the Estancia

High boys water polo team to a 12-6 victory over Orange in the Golden

West League opener Tuesday.

Kunert was joined in the scoring column by teammates Danny

Alderete and Robert DeFrancesco, who tallied two goals apiece, along

with a single score by Brock McDonald, who also made three saves in

goal.

Richard McElveny had seven goalie saves for the Eagles (2-1, 1-0

in league).

Chargers down Eagles

* GOLF: Sophomores Bridget Gleason and Lina You each shot 45 to

earn co-medalist honors for the Estancia High girls golf team, which

lost to host Edison, 238-249, at the par-36 Mile Square Golf Club in

Fountain Valley Tuesday.

Taylor West (49), Josie Flores (53) and Lauren Cushing (57) also

scored for the Eagles (3-2, 3-0 in the Golden West League).

Edison improved to 3-2.

Estancia and Costa Mesa’s match originally scheduled for Thursday

at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club has moved to Oct. 19, Eagles Coach Art Perry said.

The course is booked for a tournament on Thursday, Perry said. The

Eagles and Mustangs will also face each other on Oct. 20.

Serpas leads OCC win

* SOCCER: Orange Coast College’s men’s soccer beat Cuyamaca in El

Cajon, 3-1, Tuesday in a nonleague match. Jose Serpas had a goal and

an assist to lead the Pirates (2-2-1).

Serpas had an unassisted goal in the sixth minute to give OCC a

quick lead. Eli Solis set up Miguel Ochoa’s goal in the 22nd minute,

and goaltender Trent Painter, who finished with five saves, made a

penalty kick save in the 44th minute to give OCC a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Coyotes scored to bring Cuyamaca (2-3-0) within one, but John

Gauthier put the game away with a goal in the 90th minute with an

assist from Serpas.

The Pirates travel to Riverside Friday at 3 p.m.

Cypress too much for Bucs

* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College women’s soccer team lost its

first Orange Empire Conference match of the season, 3-0, to host

Cypress College Tuesday.

The Pirates managed only three shots on goal, compared to 10 from

the Chargers. Kara DeMille had seven saves for OCC (5-1-1 overall,

3-1).

Cypress (7-0, 4-0), ranked No. 4 in the country by the National

Soccer Coaches of America, has outscored its opposition, 31-0, to

increase its regular-season unbeaten streak to 154 games.

OCC, No. 13 by the NSCA, will host Irvine Valley at 3 p.m. Friday.

Anteaters sixth in Colorado

* GOLF: The UC Irvine women’s golf team finished in a tie for

sixth at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate at Highlands Ranch Golf Club

in Highlands Ranch, Colo., Tuesday.

The Anteaters shot 926 (306-301-319) over three rounds to tie

Colorado (306-311-309) for sixth. San Francisco won the event with a

two-day total of 908 (291-302-315).

Junior Angela Won led the Anteaters with a seventh-place finish

after carding a 225 (74-74-77). Freshman Selanee Henderson was 18th

in her collegiate debut at 231. Junior Carling Cho (234) and freshmen

Jane Chin (237) and Kim Lorenzana (243) scored for UCI.
