Estancia High track and field and boys soccer coach Steve Crenshaw

has resigned from both positions effective immediately, Eagles Boys

Athletic Director Tim Parsel said Tuesday.

Crenshaw, who came to Estancia in 1995, led the boys soccer team

to the CIF Southern Section Division IV title in the 1999-2000

season, beating top-seeded Bishop Montgomery, 5-2, in the

championship match. That team, which finished 20-1-1, outscored its opponents, 122-14.

The boys track and field team won the Golden West League title in

2003.

“We’re sorry to lose him as a coach,” Parsel said. “He is one of

the most highly regarded coaches in the area.”

Crenshaw could not be reached for comment.

Crenshaw graduated from Southern California College, which is now

Vanguard, with a business degree in 1976 and was in the entertainment

industry for a number of years before getting into coaching. He

started out as the coach for the Costa Mesa-based Extreme soccer club

before heading to Estancia in 1995.

Parsel said the final decision did not come as a surprise because

Crenshaw had been thinking about resigning for some time. Parsel said

Crenshaw stepped down for three main reasons.

“He teaches earth science and his work load increased with an

added class, so time commitment was one reason,” Parsel said. “I know

the fundraising was getting harder and harder for him. And he some

slight field problems. But the time commitment was probably the

biggest reason.”

Parsel, who also teaches earth science, said the position must be

posted for 10 days within the Newport-Mesa Unified School District

before any outside candidates are considered.

Brian Burgess, the Eagles’ wrestling coach, is handling the soccer

off-season workouts for now.

“They’re mostly doing fitness stuff,” Parsel said. “I know they’ve

been lifting weights, but it’s hard for [Burgess] because he has all

of his wrestlers, too.”
