Special education committee to meet

The Newport-Mesa Unified School District Special Education

Community Advisory Committee will hold its first public meeting of

the 2004-05 school year at 7 p.m. tonight.

The meeting will take place in the district board room at 2985-A

Bear St., Costa Mesa.

Committee chair Sandi Ames and director of special education

Patrick Ryan will discuss new special education changes, including

new staff and new strategies to enhance communication and

coordination and new methods to bolster the Individualized Education

Program process. The committee will also discuss its schedule for the

school year.

Six UCI scholars receive accolades

UC Irvine’s Academic Senate acknowledged six professors with

2004-05 Distinguished Faculty awards for their teaching, research and

university service contributions.

Jonathan L. Feng and David P. Kirkby, both of the department of

physics and astronomy, and Svetlana Jitomirskaya of the mathematics

department received the Distinguished Assistant Professor Award for

Research, the Distinguished Assistant Professor Award for Teaching

and the Distinguished Mid-Career Award for Research, respectively.

The three will speak at a Distinguished Faculty Lecture at 7 p.m.

Oct. 26 at the UCI University Club.

Donald Saari of the department of economics and mathematics,

George Tita of the department of criminology and Sue P. Duckles, a

professor and interim chair in the department of pharmacology,

received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Research, the

Distinguished Assistant Professor Award for Teaching and the Daniel

G. Aldrich, Jr. Distinguished University Service Award, respectively.

They will speak at the second Distinguished Faculty Lecture at 7 p.m.

Jan. 25., also at the UCI University Club.

Chancellor Ralph J. Cicerone will host a reception after both

public events.
