Edison claims Dave Mohs tourney title

Monday was a special night for the Edison High girls’ volleyball

team.

Taking on Corona del Mar in the Division I championship match of

the Dave Mohs Tournament, the Chargers slipped past the Sea Kings in

a heated, see-saw battle, 25-23, 24-26, 16-14, at Edison.

The tournament is named after former Edison coach Dave Mohs, and

played in the gymnasium that bears his name.

Edison trailed by two in the first game, but stormed back behind

the play of Colleen Burke and Kelly Hyder to score the final four

points to claim a 25-23 win. The Sea Kings turned the tables on the

Chargers in the second game, wiping out a 15-11 deficit to pull out a

25-23 win.

Burke was named tournament MVP.

The Chargers had reached the tournament final by eliminating Los

Gatos, 25-21, 27-25, in semifinal round action.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball action, Ocean View improved to 3-0

with a come-from-behind, 19-25, 2125, 25-11, 25-20, 15-7 win over

visiting Gahr, and Huntington Beach held off visiting Laguna Beach,

25-21, 17-25, 13-25, 25-21, 15-12.

In girls’ tennis, Huntington Beach blanked visiting Westminster La

Quinta, 18-0.

Lauren Pascoe and Jennifer Heumann, the Oilers’ Nos. 1 and 2

singles players, swept their three Aztec opponents by 6-0, 6-0, 6-0

scores.

Sweeps also went to Kelly Wong at No. 3 singles and Amy Kaufman

and Stacy Kaufman at No. 1 doubles, Elaine Nguyen and Monica

Stupaczuk at No. 2 doubles and Jenny Le and Christina Le at No. 3

doubles.

Edison edged Long Beach Wilson, 12-6. The Chargers recorded seven

points in doubles play as Melissa Boyer teamed with her sister,

Lauren, to win, 6-3, before she teamed with Ashley Rello to post 6-3,

6-1 wins.

Juniors Vi Truong and Lauren Okine also swept at No. 2 doubles,

6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

Sophomore Brittany Bass, at No. 1 singles, and No. 2 singles Vali

Bonev, each won two of three for the Chargers.

Edison also downed host Irvine, 15-3, in nonleague play.

Bass and Bonev swept at Nos. 1 and 2 singles and the Chargers’ top

doubles teams of Truong-Okine and Melissa Boyer-Lindy Shields also

earned sweeps.

In cross country, Edison’s boys (24 points) bested Santa Margarita

(31 points) and Anaheim (43 points) in a tri-meet at Irvine Regional

Park.

Edison’s and Santa Margarita each scored 18 points and Anaheim had

43 points in a girls’ nonleague meet at Irvine Regional Park.

In boys’ water polo, Huntington Beach was edged by Santa

Margarita, 6-5, at Saddleback College.

Andrew Kreitz scored twice and Bill Meripol, Robert Riker and

Robert Pusic each scored once for the Oilers.

In girls’ golf, Marina defeated Cypress, 200-213, at Navy Golf Course.
