What is the biggest issue facing the district?
The biggest issue is always the education of our students in the
core subjects of English, math, history and science. My other
priorities include fighting to prevent discrimination, demanding
administrative and fiscal accountability and empowering taxpayers
with a greater role in decision-making.
What can be done to keep test scores on the rise?
The district must continue to dedicate itself to making sure all
students are strongly literate in English. Every student must be able
to read, write and speak English proficiently if they are to master
other core subjects. We can’t let any underperforming students fall
through the cracks.
What needs to be done to bolster the budget? What programs should
take priority?
Board members must have the common-sense discipline of making sure
the district is not spending any more than what they have. My top
campaign priority is to promote higher academic standards and
achievement in English and math. “Back-to-basics” programs like our
district’s award-winning English program called Language! must take
precedence.
How can school board members better communicate with parents and
the community?
Board members must be available. I’m willing to converse and
consider input from people that many board members have shown a lack
of interest in hearing, so that I may be able to communicate with all
segments of our community. I would also like our district meetings to
be televised.
