Dinatale, Jogwe spark Newport Region 97

Newport’s Nicole Dinatale and Josie Jogwe both scored goals in the

first quarter and the team continued to play strong throughout in a

2-1 victory over North Irvine Saturday in an AYSO Region 97 girls

under-11 soccer game.

Newport’s defense held tight with great efforts from Monique

Conant, Emily Mitchell and Natalie Duthoy.

* Newport 1, Lake Forest 1 In Sunday’s game, Newport tallied its goal in the second quarter

when Nicole Dinatale sent a sharp cross in front of Lake Forest’s

goal and Savanna Gastineau drilled it into the corner.

Newport held a 1-0 lead until the fourth quarter. Other standout

players in the game were Francesca Cappellini, Allison Schelin,

Monique Conant and Madison Wooters.

In girls under-12 play:

* Newport Beach 0, Huntington Beach 0

Newport had plenty of chances to score with shots coming from Ava

Nelson, Chelsea Barth, Brianna Truxton, Kathryn Zimmermann, Meghan

Nance and Lauren D’Ippolito, but were unable to find the back of the

net.

Excellent midfield play by Megan Case and Sarah Buckingham kept

Huntington Beach at bay.

Nicole Baker played the entire game at keeper to maintain the tie.

Her job was made easier by strong defenders, Kelly Rorden, Christie

Ohlhaver and Erika Page. Emily Boone and Danielle Healy both had

strong games as well.

In boys under-16 play:

* Newport 4, South Irvine 4:

After falling behind, 3-0, in the first ten minutes, Newport made

a strong comeback, led by Sergio Rodriguez’s two goals with a score

by Santiago Salcedo.

Gary Guerrero knocked in a corner kick during the last five

minutes. Also lending support were forwards Timothy Regan, Morgan

Webster, Seth Janica and Brian Siemonsma.

Midfield passing was strong thanks to Jose Mendez, P.J. Baca,

Chris Lewis and Alex Flores. Strong defense was led by Jeremy Lewis,

Robert Guy, Dillon Giedt, Justin Whisler and keeper Tommy Olson.

Olson and Mendez shared keeper duties.

Olson made numerous saves.

Irvine scored three of its goals on rebounds after a Newport

goalkeeper had blocked a shot.

In boys under-14 play:

* Costa Mesa prevailed against the Mighty Mowers.

Whitney Regan scored a goal for the Mighty Mowers while Spencer

Baratto played solid defense and added a bicycle kick.

Joey Eggers kept the Mighty Mowers in the game with some strong

goalkeeping.

In girls under-12 play:

* The Breakers United Football Club recorded their second victory

on Saturday versus the Purple Team.

Forward Robin Young scored early in the first half after receiving

a well- placed ball from striker Kathryn Waller.

Fullbacks Christine Jacques and Sophie Leveque made outstanding

throw-ins to halfbacks Tayler Morgan, Celina Boldt, Rebecca Arnold

and Brandy Fleming, who were all able to keep the ball moving

upfield.

Sweeper Allie Pantoskey and stopper Sydney Clayton anchored the

defense.

Late in the second half, Kate Batstone started a charge that led

to an accurate pass to forward Christina Young.

Young then fed the ball to Bridget Lyons, who tapped in the goal.

Lyons recorded her second goal in three games. Keeper Tempest Blaine

denied Purple shots on goal in the second half. The breakers are now

2-1-0 and lead the division with 17 points.

In girls under-10 action:

* Mini Mias 3, Pink Pussycats 1:

The Pink Pussycats held the Mini Mias scoreless the first quarter.

Casey Duckworth, Gianna Light and Katie Reed had a number of saves in

goal. Jessica Arnold and Jenna Jarvis were strong at defense making

several stops on attacks from the Mini Mias. Emily Nall and Courtney

Buck led the attack and Buck scored for the Pink Pussycats on a

strong run.

* Orange Crush 3, Heartbreakers 0:

After a difficult week one start, the Orange Crush bounced back

with a key performance. All the pieces seemed to fall into place on

offense behind Mady Avery and Ellisia Schilling alternating at

striker and supported throughout the game at forward by Leah Van

Dyke, Medley Andrade, Tori Rojas, Madeline Hall and Claire Farmer.

Midfielders Anna Newman and Shannon Barth combined for three

goals, with two potential scores wiped out due to offsides penalties.

Stopper Nadine Lefler helped limit the Heartbreakers to zero shots

on goal.

* The Rip Curls defeated the Lean Green Fighting Machine with two

goals scored in the fourth quarter by Madison Jabara.

The offensive line of Monika Peterson and Roxana Crane aided

Jabara in her scoring. Sparkling at midfield were Page Keys, Emma

Howard and Samantha Singer led the midfield while goalkeeper Savannah

Baron helped stifle a late Rip Curl attack. Nikki Walsh, Alyssa Ohlig

and Hayley Newett played strong defense.

* Angels 3, Surf Chicks 1:

The Angels scored late to beat the Surf Chicks.

The Surf Chicks’ defense was led by Sara Cluck’s superb

goaltending to match the Angels’ defensive efforts of Caroline

Johnson and Madison Botteron. Angels’ strikers Kelsey Long, Megan

Farley and Kathryn De La Torre created several opportunities with

Long finally scoring the game’s first goal late in the third. Long

scored again in the fourth before Seneca Jakosky’s goal cut into the

lead, but Long countered with her third tally shortly thereafter to

seal the Angels’ victory.

In boys under-10:

* Patriots 3, Trojans 2:

The Patriots came back from a 2-1 deficit Saturday to beat the

Trojans.

Michal Polasek started the scoring for the Patriots, but two

second-quarter lapses allowed the Trojans to temporarily take

control.

Excellent defense during the second half by the Patriots’ Holden

Curren, Jack Williamson and Michael Schultz allowed midfielders Nick

Roman, Nick Huntley and Pierce Ward opportunities to control the

tempo.

An inspirational shot off a rebound from Polasek tied the score at

the midpoint of the second half. A goal by Marco Bruscia late in the

game, when he beat two defenders, proved to be the winner.

Alec Farrage played through the second quarter, but missed most of

the second half due to a foot injury. He is expected to be back in

the lineup next week.

* Avalanche 3, Devil Rays 0:

Strong defense and outstanding control of the midfield led to the

Avalanche victory.

Nic Sargeant gave the Avalanche a quick two-goal lead with

first-quarter assists by Sam Jones and Chris Buchanan.

Gage Coffelt added the third goal after passes from Gordon Lewis,

Riley Ricker, Scott Grew and Parker Martinez set up the shots. Joey

Gregory, Kevin Rakestraw and Rory Fleming kept pressure on the Devil

Rays throughout the game.

Rob Boullon led the Devil Ray offense with excellent ball

handling. Isaiah Suarez stopped a threatening break away and T.J.

Tarazevits contributed with a long, well-placed throw in.

At the start of the second quarter, Marc Gehlke quickly took a

shot that just missed the goal.

Jake Wadman made a breakaway with fine footwork. R.J. Roberts and

Max Johnson worked together in moving the ball toward the goal.

Rocky Gonzales was successful in goal, not allowing any goals.

In the third quarter, the Avalanche threatened, but goalie Izaak

Lofgren stopped all shots and sent the ball far down to field. The

fourth quarter was marked by strong defense, with Zack Cornwell

strongly clearing the ball. Brandt Boucher trapped and passed well.

Lee Stevens anticipated and broke up attacks.

* Raiders 4, Dementors 3: Bryan Shollin and Keaton Hirsch played

up front while Grant Moore and Griffin Leggett handled the midfield

for the Raiders. Blake Smith scored first to give the Raiders a 1-0

lead and added a second goal.

The Dementors then answered with a goal. Sweeper Dylan Roe and

fullbacks Charlie Barber, Cameron Candelaria and Andres Zourelli

provided strong defense.

Connor Leggett played goalkeeper for the first half. Adam Bennani

entered the game in the second quarter. Griffin Leggett scored two

goals. But the Dementors answered back with one of their own.

The Raiders led, 3-2, at halftime. Cameron Candelaria was brought

in on defense in the second half.

* Funky Monkeys 4, Red Bulls 0:

The Monkeys’ True Tamplin, Ian Batstone, Taylor Parks and Sean Cox

each scored goals in a well-balanced offensive attack throughout the

game. Cole Chapin, Ellery Sever, Trevor Conway and Michael Reo

demonstrated excellent offense and defense. Brandon Beck and Kolby

Pearson provided great defensive support against the Red Bulls.

In girls under-8 play:

* The Purple Panthers battled the Blue Hurricanes Sept. 11.

The Panthers had several early chances to score as Bryn Crowell,

Tara Fuller and Carlee Kapana took nice shots but were denied by the

Hurricane goalie.

A stellar defensive performance by Kira Wandrocke, Rachel

Whitelegge and Kappy Fuller kept the Hurricanes at bay for much of

the first half.

Leah Castillo played very well at goal, stopping four breakaway

shots.

McKenzie Stephens and Ryan Moncrief each drove the ball out of

their own zone and into Hurricane territory. The fourth quarter saw

extraordinary goal keeping by both teams and an intense offensive

effort by the Panthers’ Libby Knight.

Knight took the ball the length of the field six times, firing

four shots on goal and centering the ball twice for shots. Each time

the Hurricane defense prevailed. The game ended on a tremendous

Panther goalie stand. The Hurricanes had a breakaway and took shots

from point-blank range. Panther goalie Carlee Kapana made a leaping

catch to save the game.

* The Purple Panthers and Scratch Killer Bees dueled Sept. 18.

After a quick Bee goal the Panther attack was relentless and

varied.

Kappy Fuller started Panthers with a steal and beautiful

right-footed boot early in the first quarter.

Bryn Crowell assisted on the first of Libby Knight’s three goals.

Knight late found Crowell, who put the ball into the net. Rachel

Whitelegge and McKenzie Stephens led the Panther charge in the third

quarter.

Panther Midfielder Kira Wandrocke turned the ball and drove it to

Whitelegge, who took the ball to the goal and scored.

Wandrocke also turned away many Bee charges. McKenzie Stephens

scored off another steal and Knight added one more goal in the fourth

to complete the panther scoring. Leah Castillo and Tara Fuller kept

the Bees on their heels for the entire second half playing solid

defense and keeping the pressure on the Bees.

* Pink Panthers vs. Purple People Eaters

Mallory Gyulay’s four goals paced the Pink Panthers against the

Purple People Eaters.

Logan Grove and Erin Barth each helped their team with a goal

while adding many assists. A strong defense lead by Caroline Gels,

Amanda Dupont, Sabrina Sanchez, Hailey Mahaffey and Gabby Mangano

also played a key role.

Olivia Sever was a strong leader on offense and defense while Anna

Hancock made some strong saves in goal.

Julia Carney, Haley Burg and Sierra Stump led the Purple People

Eater attack. Stump scored the Eaters’ first goal while Kayla

Savarese, Tiffani Bassler and Summer Geiger played strong defense.

Mackenzie Hyde and Evelyn Stephens passed well and made some great

plays.

In boys under-8 action:

* Green Grunions vs. Ketchup and Mustards

The Green Grunions faced the the Ketchup and Mustards. Ryan

Baskent scored the only goal on an assists by Andy Gutierrez and Matt

Valeriano. D.J. Erickson, Brett Beaudette and Matthew Leffler led the

charge in goal.

* Waterbombs vs. The Silver Speed

Parker Young and Quinton McKay each made saves in goal for the

Waterbombs against the Silver Speed while Micah Adelsohn and Dominick

Folkner supported on defense.

Midfielder Collin Rowe challenged the Silver Speed on both offense

and defense while Slater Anderson exhibited det footwork. Ryan Braun,

Parker Young and Jack Binford scored for the Waterbombs offense with

assists from Alejandro Solis and Griffith Clawson.

In girls under-7 action:

* Blue Surfer Girls Vs. Purple GoGo Girls

Kathryn Arblaster, London Davis, Cameron Dewan, Peyton Groves and

Marina Knutsen made crisp passes added with Blue Surfer Girls with

solid defense and great passing. Lindsey Konrad and Jordan Scott

assisted on offense while Samantha Falasco scored multiple goals.

The Purple GoGo Girls’ Madeline Bubb, Shannon Nelson and Alexis

Paduano played staunch defense and added strong ball-handling skills.

* The Specked Green Gators had scores by Megan Keys, Paige Tamblyn

and Jacque DeFeo each scored goals for the Speckled Green Gators

against the Fire Crackers.

Emma Vujnovich, Emily Goltz, Olivia Jones, Katie Kearns and Sarah

Boese sparked the offense.

In boys under-7 action:

The Blue Flames played a solid game against the Stingers.

Brandt Walton, Carson Poivre and Jerome Higman scored for the Blue

Flames.

Henry Lyons, Philip Bradburne and Brandon Knickerbocker all played

strong defense while Topher Inman and Steven Bibona displayed deft

passing.

Sun Devils vs. Dragons

* Sam Skinner, Ryan Young and Wilson Lubeck led the Sun Devils’

attack against the Dragons.

Goalkeepers Jack McKasson, Reed Rutter and Trevor Neighbors were

very busy. Alex Borlin, Jack Cornuke, Christopher Huntley and Peter

Bush helped keep the ball in Dragons’ territory.

Trojans vs Blue Marlins

* Cooper Hendrix tallied the only first-half goal for the Trojans

while Chase Braun opened the scoring in the second half.

Lois Mora added two goals to go with strong defense from Sam

Launder, Eddie Guzman, Mickey Plecas and Michael Clark. Mathew Brodie

made key saves in goal.

In girls under-6 play:

* Both the Flamingos and Purple Go-Go Girls fought aggressively

for the ball. Erika Ellis had several breakaways for and put one

firmly in the net. Mc Kenzie Porteous also found the net.. Paige

Fults dribbled well while Julia Ackerman anchored the defense.

Mandy Tapfer booted a powerful goal kick.

In boys under-6 play:

Tigersharks vs, Green Aliens

* The Tigersharks and Green Aliens played a wild game. The Green

Aliens scored when the Tigersharks accidentally hit the ball into

their own net. P.J. Steiner added the Aliens’ second goal.

After several major attacks, Kieran Headington corralled the ball

and scored for the Tigersharks.

Joey Terrazaz slipped in another goal in the second half while

Zach Durham scored three times. Terrazaz and Sammy Heilig played

superb defense. Durham, Luke Ellis and Heilig assisted on Mason

Lindh’s goal. Ellis returned from a first quarter injury and helped

Kieran kick another goal.

* The Cheetahs’ offense kicked into high gear against the Speeding

Bullets.

Chandler Siemonsma tallied three goals while Ashe Deering added

two more.

Jon Hodges moved the ball well and Jack McClintock fired a few

shots on goal and added strong defense. Joshua Jenkins, James Hodges

and Lucas Hodges also helped on the back lines.

Riding Giants

* Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt led the Riding Giants with three

goals. Andrew Stoneman played aggressively and added two goals.

Chandler Hunt added two goals while Jacob Duehring tallied a

single score.

* The Purple Dragons faced the Eagles in a back-and-forth battle.

Malcolm Davis had a key goal in the second half while Chase

Adelsohn’s defense and passing contributed to the strong effort. Nic

Rimlinger, Barron Banta, Dominic Loftus, Max Toffel and Ben Toffel

all scored goals and blocked shots.

In girls under-5 action:

* Ashlee Young and Holly Nance led the attack for the Pink Hearts,

scoring three goals apiece, against the Pink Cats.

Kate LaGrandeur and Sydney Palmer keep the game close with strong

defense.

In boys under-5 play:

Asteroids vs. Tigers

The Asteroids, from Newport-Mesa, played a strong game, with goals

scored by Christopher Torres and Tyler Johnston against the Tigers.

Ryan Binford, Sean Liam McCarthy, Sam Kimme and Justin DeMarzo each

played well on offense and defense.

* Barracudas vs. Hawks: Justin Shollin, Brandon Rivera and Kyle

Langdon played staunch defense and provided assists while Patrick

Wynn and Jantzen Fenn capitalized on scoring opportunities

* GreenBulldogs vs. Soccer-O-Saurus

The Green Bulldogs played another great game last Saturday. Jack

Brennan scored his first ever AYSO goal for the Green Bulldogs

against the Soccer-O-Saurus. Ben Zehnder and Billy Shannon added one

goal each for the Bulldogs while Joe Skinner had several shots on

goal and played great defense. Eann McKasson also contributed.
