Sailors advance to quarters
Coach Jason Lynch’s Newport Harbor High boys water polo team ripped
through Buena Park, 28-3, and defeated Edison, 12-8, in the opening
two rounds of the South Coast tournament Friday in the Sailors’ pool.
In the opener, Parker Gregory scored four goals and added two
steals and an assist for Newport Harbor (3-1), which featured 17
different players reaching the scoring column.
Clay Jorth, Carson Hill, Dan Furman, Jovan Vranes and Nate
Castillo each scored two goals for the Sailors in the second game.
Michael Robinson had seven goalie saves and five steals in the Edison
win.
The Sailors host The Bishop’s of San Diego at 5 p.m. today in the
quarterfinals.
* In other South Coast action, Corona del Mar beat Mission Viejo,
10-7, in the first round at home Friday, then lost to visiting
Servite, 11-10, in sudden-death overtime. The Sea Kings will host
Poway at 6 p.m. today.
Upsets at Futures event
* TENNIS: Australia’s Robert Haybittel and Hamid Mirzadeh of Lake
Worth, Fla., both earned upset victories to reach the quarterfinals
of the United States Tennis Association’s Diadora Pro Championship
Futures event following play at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center
Thursday.
Haybittel knocked off No. 6 seed Scott Lipsky, 6-7 (1), 6-2, 6-1,
while Mirzadeh earned a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded Alex
Vlaski of Serbia-Montenegro. Top-seeded Zack Fleishman of Playa del
Rey, Calif., also advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over American
qualifier Jamie Gresh.
Eagles protect lead
* TENNIS: The Estancia High girls tennis team won all 18 sets to
blank host Saddleback in Golden West League action Thursday.
The win improved the Eagles to 5-3, 4-0 in league, while dropping
the Roadrunners to 0-5 in league. Sage O’Toole and Cathy Pittman
combined to win all 18 of their doubles games for the Eagles.

Oilers sweep Sailors
* VOLLEYBALL: Senior outside hitter Kiley Hall finished with 13
kills and 12 digs for host Newport Harbor High, which suffered a
25-15, 25-17, 25-22 nonleague girls volleyball defeat to visiting
Huntington Beach Thursday.
Taryn Tarnutzer and Coco Yokoyama each tallied four kills while
Stephanie Trinen added six digs for the Sailors (3-5), who entered
the week ranked second in CIF Southern Section Division II-AA.
Huntington Beach came in ranked fourth Division II-AA.
Northwood tops Tars
* TENNIS: Newport Harbor High doubles partners Brittanny Sturgess
and Sasha Dunlap swept their three sets, but host Northwood
prevailed, 11-7, in a nonleague girls tennis match Thursday.
Sturgess, a junior, and Dunlap, a sophomore, won, 7-7, 7-5, 6-0.
Newport Harbor fell to 4-3, while Northwood improved to 4-2.

Lions roar past Panthers
* SOCCER: David McAulay, Matt Hess and Jose Hernandez each scored
two goals to lead the Vanguard University men’s soccer team to an 8-2
nonconference win over visiting Chapman Wednesday.
Jarrett Borrego and Darin DeVore capped the scoring for Vanguard
(5-3) with single scores while goalkeeper Chris Swift made four
saves.
