The doubles players for the Newport Harbor High girls tennis team

dominated the women of Troy, but the singles play of the Warriors

proved to be too much in the Sailors’ 10-8 loss Wednesday afternoon

at Newport Harbor High.

Newport Harbor’s Chrissy Schwartz won the only singles set for the

Sailors, defeating her opponent, 6-4, in the third round. But that

was all the singles success the Sailors could muster.

“We had a tough day today,” Schwartz said after her sets. “We

didn’t concentrate on everything and we weren’t very consistent.

“But we did do a good job in getting fired up and our doubles were

excellent.”

The doubles play for Newport Harbor (5-4) resulted in only two

lost sets. But both the No. 1 doubles -- Sasha Dunlap and Brittany

Sturgess -- and No. 2 singles -- Megan McKay and Carly Adams -- swept

their sets. Alex McIntosh and Brittany Cluck won twice at No. 3

doubles.

McKay and Adams, both juniors, were playing together for the first

time.

“We didn’t expect to play like this, but we came together really

well,” McKay said.

Added Adams: “Megan really pumps me up and gets me fired up.”

The Sailors host Woodbridge at 3 p.m. today.
