Laguna runners get two league wins

Laguna Beach High’s boys’ cross country team showed its depth in

defeating a talented Tesoro squad, 24-31, and a young University

team, 20-40, in a Pacific Coast League tri-meet at William R. Mason

Park.

It was the opening day of league competition for all three

schools.

The two victories were encouraging, Laguna coach Dave Brobeck

said, because the Breakers defeated the Titans and Trojans without

the use of five their top 10 runners due to injury: Shane Riehl, calf

and shin; Shawn Pfender, shin; Jeremy Eaton, knee and illness; Ryan

McCarter, shin; Michael Brown, fibia.

Max Mullender posted Laguna’s top time with a 15:49.

Laguna’s girls’ squad trained through the race, Brobeck said,

adding that the girls elected to race Saturday at prestigious

Stanford Invitational.

“The goal for the boys, as it’s been for some time now, is to get

everyone back healthy,” Brobeck said.

In girls’ tennis, Laguna won for the sixth time in seven matches

by defeating host Mater Dei, 11-7, in nonleague play Tuesday at Los

Caballeros Racquet Club in Fountain Valley.

Claire Rietsch earned a trio of 6-0 wins at No. 1 singles and has

not lost a game this season.

Kellie Ammerman, at No. 2 singles, also swept, winning 6-1, 6-0,

6-2.

The Breakers’ top doubles tandem of Katie Ochwat and Correy Miller

won two of three, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Earlier, Laguna was an 11-7 home winner over San Clemente, doing

so without Rietsch, who rested and did not play the match.

Katie Ochwat and Lauren Thigpen earned a sweep at No. 1 doubles,

6-0, 6-1, 6-0, as did Miller and Lorren Butterwick at No. 2 doubles,

6-1, 6-4, 6-0.

Ammerman won two of three in singles play.

Laguna also won the battle of the beaches when it drilled Newport

Harbor, 14-4, in a nonleague match.

Rietsch swept 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, Katie Ochwat and Thigpen swept at No.

1 doubles, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 and the Breakers’ No. 3 team of Miller and

Butterwick swept 6-1, 7-6, 6-4.

In boys’ water polo, Tustin pulled off a 10-7 upset of Laguna at

Tustin. Tuesday.

In earlier play, Laguna edged La Canada, 9-8, in the ninth-place

game of the South Coast Tournament.

Laguna rallied from two goals down by outscoring the Spartans,

3-1, in the fourth quarter.

Trevor Frimond led the Breakers with four goals and Ryan Fair

scored three goals and Mike Dick scored twice.

Bret Burge finished with 14 saves.

Laguna also lost to Villa Park, 12-4, in second-round play. Faur

ked the Breakers with three goals.

Villa Park went on to win the prestigious, 32-team tournament.

In nonleague play, Laguna downed visiting Costa Mesa, 12-7. Dick

netted five goals, Fair scored four times, Cameron Brinkman scored

twice and Kelan Hurley scored once.

Burge had 16 saves.

In girls’ golf, Laguna squared its record at 2-2 following a

247-271 nonleague victory over visiting Savanna at Aliso Viejo Golf

Course.

The Breakers’ Sasha Speare tied for medalist honors at 43.
