Anteaters know how to play the market

Most of the UC Irvine business students in a $1.5-million stock

project sponsored by venture capitalist Chuck Martin are in the black

and outperforming the market, according to the university’s graduate

school of management.

In a yearlong competition that ends in May 2005, six teams

invested Martin’s money and are seeing gains ranging from 5% to 52%

with only one team posting losses.

Martin, who is on the advisory board for the graduate school of

management’s dean, planned the project to help students analyze

financially sound companies and work in teams. The team with the best

return on its investments will win 50% of its earnings, as much as

$12,000 per team member.
