Newport-Mesa Infinity sets scoring record

Newport-Mesa Infinity, an AYSO Region 97 affiliated boys club team,
set a club record for goals in a game by defeating Irvine United,
12-2. Goal scorers for Newport were Juan Gonzalez (four), Sean Davis
(two), Shane Rocco (two), Rodrigo Ruvalcaba, Rory Kew (two) and
Austin Webster.
Narrowly missing goals were Gavin Arblaster, Erickson Klein, John
Ryder, Simon Hedrick and Austin Wobrock.
Strong performances were turned in by Daniel Netzer, Cameron
Conway, Sean Donahue and Zac Chocek. The Infinity improved their CSL
Delta Division record to 3-2 and moved up to third place.
Next weekend they take on local rivals OCU and the league-leaders
SC Bulldogs.
In girls under-12 play:
* Prickly Pineapples 1, Blue Babes 0
The Pineapples’ Rochelle Bowlin scored on a breakaway in the first
quarter on a hard smash that made it by the goalie and gave the
Pineapples a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
But the defense and goal keeping took over as Cheyenne Usman made
several great saves for the Blue Babes to keep their team close.
* Newport Beach 3, San Clemente 2
Lauren D’Ippolito scored early and put Newport in the lead, but
San Clemente came back and scored twice to take the lead.
In the end it was all Newport, as Emily Boone and Kathryn
Zimmermann scored late in the game to give their team the victory.
The victory came on the strong play by Mary Buckingham, Luanne
Baker and Sherry Rorden. San Clemente was turned away by Newport’s
goalkeepers Sheryl Ohlhaver and Linda Case, who both kept Newport in
the game.
* Newport Beach 1, Huntington Beach 0
Lauren D’Ippolito took Kathryn Zimmermann’s pass and kicked it in
for the game winning goal.
Huntington Beach’s defense turned away numerous attacks by
Newport’s forwards Ava Nelson and Chelsea Barth. But Megan Case,
Meghan Nance and Brianna Truxton kept the pressure on Huntington
Beach the entire game.
Newport was strong in defense and Nicole Baker made an outstanding
save at keeper late in the game to preserve the victory.
In boys under-12 play:
* G-Unit 2, Yellow Stingers 0
Sergio Garcia and Matt Mello scored on assists from Conner Moy,
Ryan Davidson and CJ Tona to lead the undefeated G-Unit to victory.
The midfield was controlled by Cody Abrams, Garrett Keillor, Andy
Mangano and Taylor Sims.
Jack Hanle and Hayden Cornwell played at goal and kept the
Stingers from scoring.
Defensive saves were made by Chase Wells, Tynan Yanaga and Daniel
Calvillo.
In girls under-11 play:
* Newport 3, San Clemente 0
Newport continued it’s undefeated season with a thrilling victory
over a tough San Clemente team. Madison Wooters scored off an assist
from Allison Schelin near the end of the first half and then Newport
dominated the second half with scoring by Josie Jogwe and Wooters.
The entire squad played great team soccer with standout performances
by Madison Grant, Delaney Bell, Natalie Duthoy and Savanna Gastineau.
* Newport 4, Rancho Santa Margarita 0
Josie Jogwe scored one from a tough angle in the first half of
Sunday’s game, while Meaghan Kay, Franchesca Capelinni and Jogwe each
added one in the second half to ensure another victory and a
continued undefeated season (5-0-1) for Newport.
Other standout contributions were made by Allison Schelin, Emily
Mitchell, Molly Anderson, Monique Conant, Nicole Dinatale and Ali
Hayes.
In girls under-10 play:
* Pink Pussycats 3, Heartbreakers 1
The Pink Pussycats played a strong offensive game with Emily Nall
and Courtney Buck scoring and Gigi Light taking several shots on
goal. Yvonne Escalera and Meghan Vance assisted at midfield.
Heartbreaker Katie Gaitan scored the first goal of the game off of
an assist by Gabe Parissi. Katie was also assisted on offense by
Sarah Zomaya, Megan Bathen, Tanya Henriquez, Ricci Bartonand Alex
Palmer.
Andrea Ocampo, Taylor Kalatschan and Christina Ferrarro played
good defense and Sarah Zomaya and Megan Bathen stopped many shots on
goal.
* Gryffindor Seekers 2, Pink Pussycats 0
Gryffindor Seekers’ Samantha Stalder scored the first goal, with
an assist from Analysa Vivanco. Analysa then followed with a second
goal for the team from a targeted pass by Lea Phillips.
More than a dozen shots on goal by the Pink Pussycats could not
get through Seeker’s goalies Katty Ayala and Jane Layton, or their
strong defensive lineup made up of Kirsten Rohan, Andie Strode, Dana
Jessen, Taylor Hickerson and Haley Scott.
Alice Barry, playing midfield, had several strong kicks up field
to Seeker forwards who kept pressure on the Pussycat defense.
* Bulldogs 1, Gryffindor Seekers 0
Seekers’ Andie Strode, Jane Layton, Lea Phillips and Analysia
Vivanco made several goal attempts but were unable to break through
the Bulldogs’ defense in a game played Oct. 2. The Seekers’ strong
defensive lineup of Kirsten Rohan, Dana Jessen, Taylor Hickerson,
Haley Scott, Alice Barry and Ana Figueroa kept the Bulldogs to a
one-score lead.
* Rip Curl 4, Green Chihuahuas 2
The offensive line up of Samantha Singer, Emma Howard and Page
Keys showed up for the Rip Curls. Madison Jabara had three goals in
the first quarter to pace the Rip Curls. The fourth goal was scored
by Roxana Crane.
Handling the defense were Alyssa Ohlig, Nikki Walsh and in the
goal, Monika Peterson.
In boys under-10 play:
* Devil Rays 3, Hurricanes 1
Izaak Lofgren, Isaiah Suarez, and Rocky Gonzales each took a turn
in goal through the first three quarters, holding the Hurricanes
scoreless. Brandt Boucher and Marc Gehlke showed great ball handling,
moving the ball up the side line and each taking a shot that narrowly
missed.
Lee Stevens, Zack Cornwell and T.J Tarazevits controlled the
midfield, repeatedly preventing breakaways. The Devil Rays chalked up
three goals in the third quarter, with R.J. Roberts, Max Johnson, and
Bob Boullon each putting one in.
* Red Bull 5
Goal tending was provided by Cameron Geehr, Mason Powers and Max
Thronell in the Red Bull victory. Charlie Gels had two goals and one
successful penalty kick. Massisimo Navarretta also successfully
completed one goal and one penalty kick.
Nathan Chaness displayed his usual hustle and two goal attempts.
Zachary Diamond, Christian Kennedy and William Laidlaw provided solid
defense.
* Funky Monkeys 5, UFOs 0
The Monkeys’ Taylor Parks had his best offensive day with the
Monkey’s first hat trick. Ian Batstone scored one goal and True
Tamplin shot one goal in addition to helping out as goalkeeper.
Cole Chapin, Michael Reo, Kolby Pearson and Trevor Conway
demonstrated excellent offensive and defensive play in the midfield
while Sean Cox led a tremendous defense, including Ian Mac Innis as
fullback and Ellery Sever in goal. Brandon Beck, absent for a
personal family matter, was definitely missed.
* Avalanche 1, Raiders 0
A tight, well-played defensive game ended in a 1-0 Avalanche win
over the Raiders. Scott Grew made an assist on a first period goal by
Nic Sargeant.
The Avalanche had additional shots on goal by Parker Martinez and
Sam Jones that were turned away by the Raider keeper.
Rory Fleming, Joey Gregory and Kevin Rakestraw kept up the
defensive pressure, while Gordon Lewis, Gage Coffelt and Chris
Buchanan covered midfield.
For the Raiders, Blake Smith, Keaton Hirsch and Bryan Shollin
played up front while Grant Moore and Griffin Leggett handled the
midfield. Cameron Candelaria started at defensive fullback, with
Connor Leggett at goal keeper. Andres Zourelli and Adam Bennani
rotated in for the Raiders. Dylan Roe and Charlie Barber had many key
stops on defense.
In girls under-8 play:
* Pink Panthers vs. The Watermelons
Mallory Gyulay came from defense to score the lone Pink Panther
goal. Despite lots of amazing attempts from Erin Barth, Gabby Mangano
and Logan Grove, the score stayed the same.
Sabrina Sanchez, Amanda Dupont and Hailey Mahaffey were key in
holding off the Watermelon offense. Erin Barth, Amanda Dupont, Hailey
Mahaffey and Gabby Mangano all played on goal, and with the help of
their stops, they managed to keep it close.
* Purple Panthers vs. Purple People Eaters
The Purple Panthers were led by goalies Leah Castillo and Carlee
Kapana. Kappy Fuller and McKenzie Stephens played well together on
the offensive and defensive end.
Tara Fuller played at midfield and controlled the People Eaters on
both offense and defense. Kira Wandrocke captained a defensive unit
that allowed no People Eater goals and Bryn Crowell and Libby Knight
combined for the lone goal of the game.
In boys under-8 play:
* Waterbombs vs. Eagles
The Waterbombs’ offense composed of Griff Clawson, Dominik
Folkner, Slater Anderson and Quinton McKay worked diligently with
shots to the goal. Alejandro Solis and Jack Binford scored for the
Waterbombs and goalies Ryan Braun and Parker Young protected the net
from the powerful Eagles’ offense. Micah Adelsohn and Collin Rowe
supported in the backfield.
* Red Eyed Dragons vs. The Grunions
Once warmed up, the Dragons turned up the heat, with the first
goal by Jake Parks. Erick Pineda on defense was relentless in keeping
the ball out of Dragon territory and the entire team excelled on
offense and defense. Cory Stowell’s break-away accounted for the
second and final goal for the Dragons.
* Inferno vs. Mustard and Ketchup
A strong midfield presence led by Owen Muller and Jonathon Edison
kept the Inferno Balls attacking, but Mustard and Ketchup were up to
the challenge, denying the Inferno’s scoring chances.
Landon Knight, Camden Daily, Jack Heald and Zach Granoff took
several shots on goal, while the defense was anchored by great
goalkeeping -- Luke Shea and Blake Jensen each had several saves.
David Hartman and Joe Ahearn contributed to the Inferno’s defensive
effort.
In girls under-7 play:
* Green Gators vs. Go-Go Girls
Megan Keys scored the first goal for the Gators, followed by goals
from Olivia Jones & Jacque Defeo. Emily Goltz and Paige Tamblyn were
effective in keeping the ball in Gator territory.
Aiding on the offense were Sara Boese & Emma Vujnovich.
* Firecrackers vs. Bubblegum Girls
The goals for the Firecrackers were scored by Kate Hefner, Clair
Olmstead, Sienna Keillor, Julianna Eifler and Sydney Conn. Alexis
Abrams and Seneca displayed good ball control, while Peyton
Espley-Jones and JoJo Stassel played on defense, preventing several
goals from being scored.
In boys under-7 play:
* Blue Flames vs. Blue Marlins
Topher Inman and Carson Poivre had the only goals for the Flames,
while Henry Lyons, Steven Bibona and Brandon Knickerbocker worked
hard on both ends of the field from the halfback position.
Jerome Higman played strong at forward and Philip Bradburne, Cade
Walton and Brandt Walton all contributed.
* Trojans vs. Jaguars
Cooper Hendrix scored two goals in the first half with good
defensive performances put in by Sam Launder, Jose Luis Mora, Michael
Clark and Chase Braun. Matthew Brodie scored the team’s third goal in
the second half.
Jack Beeker, Eddie Guzman and Michael Plecas all highly
contributed on defense.
* Salty Sea Dawgs
The Salty Sea Dawgs recorded its third shutout behind the defense
of Jake Weyrich, Peter Harano, Kingston McCarthy and Sean Korkmaz.
Goalies Jordan Teisan, J.D. Dennis, and Jack Rapillo each had
multiple saves. The only goal of the game was recorded by Andrew
Laidlaw on a corner kick from Jeremiah Sheldon.
* Predators vs. Green Monsters
The Predators faced off against a well-organized Green Monsters
team in a boys under-7 Region 97 game Sept. 25. The Green Monsters
took the early lead through a low, hard shot to the right of goal,
with goalie Alex Forman just barely missing the save as he dove and
outstretched himself.
Carter Scott, Charlie Stassel and Alden Burke worked on defense as
the Predators searched for an equalizer. Avery Rowe played in
midfield and the forwards played well against the Monsters, with Alex
Forman hitting the post.
Dillon Murphy later scored to tie the game.
* Predators vs. Red Lazers
The Red Lazers shot a corner to the right and Charlie
Stasselscored off of it early in the game. The Predators appeared to
have most of the pressure but the Red Lazers were resilient and took
every chance to go forward in search of an equalizer.
After halftime, Carter Scott took advantage of a small moment of
hesitation in the opponents’ defense to force the ball into the net
and became the second Predator defender to score in the game.
In girls under-6 play:
* Pink Dolphins vs. Shining Stars
. Callie Govaars, Claire Johnson and Charlie Toffel each had
numerous runs on the goal starting from midfield, while Natalie
Capellini contributed several strong kicks to regain ball control.
Passing by Kate Granoff kept the Pink Dolphins in the action and
Marley Mais headed up the Dolphins’ defense, holding back many of the
Shining Stars’ attempts on goal.
* Pink Dolphins vs. Green Butterflies
Charlie Toffel, Callie Kennedy and Claire Johnson all teamed up to
score the first goal. Marley Mais and Kate Granoff provided assists
for later Pink Dolphin goals, and Claire Johnson had an impressive
defensive save that she turned around and took downfield to score.
* Blue Dolphins vs. Blue Dolphins
The dark Blue Dolphins were lead by the defensive play of Emily
Fletcher and Abby Flores. Marissa Cislaw and Kailey Hambek again lead
the offense, with Amanda Wilson, Kendall Machado and Paige Okey each
contributing key kicks and blocks.
* Flamingos vs. Purple Go-Go Girls
Paige Fults led the team with two goals and a sliding save, while
Madeline Phillips assisted on one of Fults’ goals. Erika Ellis scored
a long shot from the right side and Julia Ackerman and Mc Kenzie
Porteous narrowly missed scoring.
Mandy Tapfer and Kate Mc Allister made contributions to the
Dolphins’ scoring and defensive efforts.
* Blue Sharks vs. Purple Ponies
Danielle Wilson had a strong offensive game with three goals,
while teammates Taylor Craig and Lauren Vissman hustled to score one
goal each. Melelani Falasco limited the Ponies to two goals.
In boys under-6 play:
* Asteroids vs. Green Lizards
Christopher Castillo scored for the Asteroids with supporting
offense throughout the game from Bryce Edmonson, Sam Kimme and Sean
Liam McCarthy. Ryan Binford and Justin DeMarzo raced after the ball
many times challenging, the Green Lizards’ defense.
* Tigersharks vs. Maroon Monsters
Zach Durham scored first with a fast attack in the first quarter.
A few minutes later a major scrimmage involving Joe Terraraz, Luke
Ellisand Sammy Heilig resulted in Terraraz bouncing the ball in a
second time.
Mason Lindh and Sammy Heilig played on defense, while Kieran
Headington led attack after attack and scored two goals. In the
second half Luke Ellis and Terraraz aided Zach Durham in putting in
another ball.
* Riding Giants vs. Blue Surfers
The Riding Giants battled the Blue Surfers in a close competitive
game until Corbin Joyce took over on both the defense and offensive
ends of the field. Corbin made numerous steals and scored one goal,
while Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt played aggressive defensive and had
numerous shots sail just wide of the goal.
Andrew Stoneman scored on a breakaway and Jacob Duehrling set up
goals with his passing, along with Chandler Hunt Matthew Torres.
* Cheetahs vs. Sharks
On offense, Joshua Jenkins played a solid game and made several
good passes. Lucas Hodges moved the ball well and took a shot on
goal. Ashe Deering, Jack McClintock and Chandler Siemonsmaall had
shots on goal as well, with McClintock putting three into the net,
Deering two and Siemonsma one.
* Purple Dragons vs. Red Team
Malcolm Davis scored first for the Purple Dragons and Barron Banta
made a save that kept it close. Chase Adelsohn held off many of the
Red Team’s attacks and Dominic Loftus and Nic Rimlinger consistently
advanced the ball toward the opponents’ goal.
In girls under-5 play:
* Yellow Bumblebees vs. Purple Pandas
Melinda Stevens scored two goals, while Hannah Darrow and Hanna
Mathisrud each scored one. Kera Newland played good offense, and Zoe
DeVine made two breakaways to score two goals.
In boys under-5 play:
* Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. The Soccer-A-Saureses
The unstoppable Pepper defense was led by Randy Vance, and Luc
Levine. On the offensive side of the game, Chance Duma scored
numerous goals, along with Dillon Lippman and Brady Scanlan.
* Green Bulldogs vs. Dinomites
Jack Brennan, Ben Zehnder, Joe Skinner and Billy Shannon all
scored goals for the Green Bulldogs, while Eann McKasson had numerous
assists.
* Green Lizards vs. Asteroids
Raymond Haskell made plays on both end and Sam Wertheimer scored
to lead their team. Colin Avary and Angus Batstone had hard shots on
goal that just missed, while Jordan Firey, Wells Drayton and Brady
Glenn set the tone with consistent defensive play.
* The Stingers vs. Red Hawks
Max Sandberg and Keagan Coyne scored goals with teammates Cole
McFetters and Scott Ryder, while Forrest Faigen provided offensive
support throughout the game.
