Sea Kings set record

Corona del Mar High’s girls golf team broke its own school record,

set earlier this season, by four strokes with a 208-222 Pacific Coast

League victory over visiting Northwood Thursday at Newport Beach

Country Club.

The Sea Kings’ 208 also set a course record, played on aerated and

sanded greens, CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said.

CdM’s Katie McKitterick earned medalist honors with a 39, which

included one birdie, while Katie Albright (40), Caitlin McDonald

(42), Maggie Nelson (43) and Michelle Albrecht (44) all contributed

to the record-setting performance.

CdM (7-1, 3-1 in league) shot a 212 -- its previous best score --

to defeat Santa Margarita by 24 strokes on Sept. 21.

Chen paces Lightning

* GOLF: Sage Hill School freshman Justine Chen shot 3-over-par 39

to lead the Lightning to a 255-329 Golden West League girls golf win

over Costa Mesa Thursday at Rancho San Joaquin in Irvine.

Sophomores Natalie Kraft (49) and Emma Koh (52) rounded out a

top-three sweep for Sage (7-2, 7-1 in league).

Madison Gillis (55) and Kimberly Venditozzi (60) also scored for

the winners.

‘Eaters topple 49ers

* VOLLEYBALL: The host UC Irvine women’s volleyball team knocked

off 23rd ranked Long Beach State for the third straight time with a

30-24, 26-30, 30-29, 30-24 Big West Conference victory in front of a

season-high 673 spectators inside Crawford Court Thursday night.

Senior Kelly Wing led the Anteaters (11-4, 5-2 in the conference)

with 33 kills and 12 digs while teammates Trisha White and Amanda

Vazquez tallied 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Setter Ashlie Hain had 56 assists while Keegan Featherstone

notched 11 digs and four service aces for the victors, who held the

49ers (12-2, 5-2) to a .167 hitting percentage.

CdM sweeps Trojans

* VOLLEYBALL: Senior Lindsey Ensign’s 12 kills helped the Corona

del Mar High girls volleyball team defeat host University, 25-14,

25-22, 25-22, in a Pacific Coast League match Thursday.

Erica Solis and Jordan Smith each had five kills while Solis added

six digs for the Sea Kings (14-4, 2-0 in league). Traci Lawson and

Kelly Christian each had 10 assists while Shannon McMenomy tallied

six digs and two aces to help down the Trojans (10-3, 1-1).

Eagles down Seahawks

* GOLF: Bridget Gleason earned medalist honors with a 4-over-par

39 to lead the host Estancia High girls golf team to a 228-269 Golden

West League victory over Ocean View Thursday on the par-35 Mesa Linda

course at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

The Eagles’ 228 was three shots more than their season-best 225,

also accomplished at Mesa Linda.

Estancia (5-4, 5-2 in league) was also boosted by Lina You (41),

Lauren Cushing (49), Avery Williams (49) and Lauren Donner (50).

Hawks stop Sailors

* GOLF: Newport Harbor High junior Natalie Draganza shot a

6-over-par 41 to earn medalist honors, but the Sailors fell to

visiting Laguna Hills, 236-239, in a Sea View League girls golf match

Thursday on the Mesa Linda course at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club.

Kayleigh Horn followed Draganza with a 44 while Erin Callaghan and

Katie McKay each shot 47. Iko Kagasoff’s 50 rounded out the Sailors’

scoring.

Sea King girls breeze

* CROSS COUNTRY: Corona del Mar High girls took five of the top

six places en route to their 19-36 victory over host Laguna Beach

Thursday to remain undefeated in the Pacific Coast League.

Sophomore Hilary May took first in 20:20 followed in places 3-6 by

teammates Allison Damon (20:46), Nichole Slykhous (21:08), Christie

St. Geme (21:53) and Ahlia Kattan (22:02) for CdM (4-0 in league).

Sea King Kenneth Wong scored a second-place finish in 17:22, but

the CdM boys suffered their first league loss following a 27-29

decision. CdM’s Jack Turner placed fourth in 17:40 while teammate

Ryan Guthrie came in fifth in 17:51. CdM’s Tommy Hutchison placed

seventh (18:01), just two seconds out of sixth, while Timmy Scott

finished 11th in 18:47. The Sea King boys fell to 3-1 in league while

Laguna improved to 4-0.

Saints top Lightning

* WATER POLO: Julian Tooma had three goals Thursday, but it wasn’t

enough to prevent visiting Sage Hill from a 7-4 nonleague loss to

Santa Ana.

Jordan Cline had the other goal for Sage Hill, which received five

saves from Trevor Granger.

Tars, CdM could meet

* WATER POLO: Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar high boys water

polo teams both begin play on the same side of the draw in the 11th S

& R Sport Water Polo Cup that begins today at the William Woollett

Jr. Aquatics Complex in Irvine, which replaced the Heritage Park

Aquatics Center.

Newport Harbor (5-4) takes on Davis at noon while CdM (5-5)

battles Coronado at 1:10 p.m. If both teams win, they would play each

other at 5:10 p.m. today. If they both lose, they would face each

other at 6:20.

The tournament features some of the top programs in the state such

as Long Beach Wilson, Bellarmine, Harvard-Westlake and Clovis West

among the 16-team field.

All teams are guaranteed four games -- two each on Friday and

Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. Saturday.

Newport battles to tie

* FIELD HOCKEY: Newport Harbor High had several scoring chances,

but visiting Edison’s defense proved too much as the Sunset League

powers dueled to a scoreless tie at the Harper Community Center in

Costa Mesa Thursday.

The Sailors (12-2-5) fired 10 shots on goal and had the ball just

inches from entering the goal on four occasions, Newport Coach Kristy

Cross said. Forward Laura Vassar bolstered the Sailors’ offense,

Cross said.

Ciara Lawrence made four saves in goal for Newport.
