Red Barons fight to tie

The Red Barons fought to a 1-1 draw as Hunter Meece scored late in

the second half off an assist from Evan Gray in an AYSO Region 57

boys under-12 game played Sept. 11.

Max Carpenter made numerous saves to keep the game tied at one

apiece. The defense was led by led by James Conger, Sam Noe and Devin

Gunay.

In boys under-8 play:

* Jake Hastings led the Green Vipers with two goals in their

season-opening victory against the Hornets.

Tommy Brooks began the scoring with a penalty kick, while Jack

Menzia added a third quarter goal in the win. The Vipers’ defense was

anchored by Ricky Nadal and Liam Karas, who held the Hornets

scoreless.

Brett Schisler had an impressive shot for the Hornets, which

narrowly missed putting his team on the board.

* Orange Madness defeated the Black Hawks, 6-1, on goals by

Anthony Cecere, Michael Iacobelli and Griffin Peacock.

Randall and Kevin Hill provided strong goalkeeping, and Cole

Caminiti, Blake Sudeck, Nate Pozin and Chase Alibrando anchored the

defense.

In boys under-12 play:

* A late charge by the Red Barons saw them overcome a 3-0 deficit

in the second half and obtain a 4-3 win on Sept. 18.

Tony McCoy scored his first goal of the season and Hunter Meece

added three goals during the second-half blitz. The defense, led by

Louis Eisenberg, Josh Giddings and Scott Youngman, stepped it up in

the last minutes to preserve the win.

* The Red Barons kicked their offense into high gear, scoring

seven times in a game played Sept. 22.

Scott Youngman and Anthony Andry got their first goals of the

season with assists from Kevin Hoffman and Tony McCoy. The defense

remained strong giving up only two goals, shutting out their

opponents in the second half.

Ernie Martinez and Devin Gunay each made numerous defensive

assists.

* The offense again was on fire as the Red Barons won their third

game in a row, 6-0, on Oct. 2.

Sam Noe scored for the Barons and then helped Max Carpenter

preserve the shutout at keeper during the final quarter.

Hunter Meece, Anthony Andry and Tony McCoy also added goals for

the offense, while Kevin Hoffman, Scott Youngman, James Conger and

Josh Giddings led the defense, along with Ernie Martinez and Evan

Gray.

In girls under-12 play:

* The Sprint Mints and the Patriots played a close match, but in

the end, the Sprint Mints prevailed, 1-0. Hannah Bannan scored the

lone goal in the first half backed, up by offensive play from Liz

Barzegar, Carly Bryan, Annika and Marika Gerken, Molly Larkins and

Savannah Thies.

Anchoring the defense was Jaden Heinecke, Alicia Ginsberg and

Katie Matthews. Shutting out the opposition were goalkeepers Bannan,

Caroline Grant, Amy Holder, and Sophia Herzlinger, who held off an

attack from the Patriots in the second half.

In girls under-14 play:

* In a close contest, the Blue Waves played to a 2-2 tie against

the Swedish Fish.

The Blue Waves scored first with a well-timed pass from Brittanny

Donahue to Chelsea Waite for the goal, assisted by Annalise Moore.

Molly Vorwerck scored the tying goal late in the game, carrying the

ball from mid-field all the way to the goal.

Led by Kelly Gans, Laura Fleming, Korinne Kornmann, and Jenny

Machin, the Waves’ defense held strong, while keeper Zoe Salaam

rejected more than 10 shots on goal. Midfielders Jennifer Zimmerman,

Nekisa Hag, Lili Otto and

Michelle Lancaster kept the ball moving forward, and Jackie

Kingkade was very aggressive on defense and at halfback.

In girls under-10 play:

* Emily Krebs scored two goals, one with an assist from Katherine

Noe to lead the Sunkissed.

Sara Machoskie also scored two goals, one off of a corner kick.

Olivia Peterson knocked in another and Alexa Losey and Jaime Kingkade

provided strong defense.

Marit Vangrow headed a kickoff from the mid-field, while Natasha

Fisker and Katherine Noe were the goalkeepers.

* The Fireworks edged out Deja Blue, 4-3, on Saturday.

The Fireworks jumped out on top 3-0 with multiple goals by Shelby

Brown. But in the second half, Deja Blue came back with three goals

by Caroline Strom.

The final goal was scored by Kelsey Humphreys who went coast to

coast and scored for the Fireworks. A big save by Taryn Beaufort in

goal and strong defensive efforts by Emily Day, Sheila Sadr, and Tana

Cooper all contributed to the Fireworks win.

* The Tigers beat the Jaguars by a score of 5-4. Katie Curci,

Kristen Risser and Katie Groke led the Tigers. Shannon Griffin had

four goals for the Jaguars.

In girls under-13 play:

* Corona del Mar overcame numerous injuries to defeat Tustin, 2-1,

Sept. 26 in a girls under-13 plus league game.

Katie Deverian scored both goals for CdM on assists from Kate

Alvarado and Kelli Feeley. Forwards Katie Demiranda and Brooke

Demiranda gave CdM numerous other scoring opportunities.

Four CdM players suffered injuries during the hard fought game.

Lindsay Anderson, Natalie Hupp and Chloe Harder all played well in

the goal to hold the second place Tustin team to one goal.

Lauren Rule, Caitlin Ahearn and Terra Friedman helped CdM control

the midfield, and Tasha Greenberg, Emily Baker and Sarah Folks

anchored the strong CdM defense.

In boys under-6 play:

* Team Fireball and the Hornets were very evenly matched Saturday

morning as the 6-year-old players took over the soccer fields.

Fireball Jacob Diaz was knocked down but recovered to score a

goal, and Jacob Ayers and Hunter Holden also scored unassisted goals.

Defensively, Liam Somekh showed a lethal leg as he protected the

Fireball goal and sent the ball down the field repeatedly. Aaron

Senk, Blake Vander Veer, Oliver Kim, Trevor Phillips, Trevor Stearns,

David Roudebush, Jack Frey, Grant Janavs also lit up the playing

field.

In girls under-6 play:

* Pink Power Flamingoes Jessica Viale, Gabby Finear, Kelly Lang,

Kaylin K, Savannah Stewart, Haley Hopkins, Olivia Egly and Jennifer

Wetton all scored goals for the Flamingoes against the Shooting

Starts on Saturday.

Good team effort and lots of practice has paid off with success in

the net.

In girls under-7 play:

* The Blue Cheetahs and the Blue Dolphins battled to a thrilling

2-2 tie Saturday afternoon.

With the score tied 1-1 at the half, the Blue Dolphins took a 2-1

lead in the 3rd quarter. But the Blue Cheetahs stepped it up in the

4th quarter when Camille Clark scored her second goal of the game

with assists from Kelly Hesp and Tarah Sadler.

Strong defensive play by Anna Hurray, Charlie Thomas, and Megan

Mortimer helped shut down the Blue Dolphins to secure the tie.

In boys under-10 play:

* The lead teetered back and forth as the Green Vipers and

Avalanche played a match Saturday.

Chris Beyrooty scored first for the Vipers tying the score 1-1.

Drew Hanson’s strong defense and Liam Karas’ goal tending kept the

Avalanche at bay into the fourth quarter.

But the definite play of the game came in the fourth quarter with

the score tied at 2-2 -- the Vipers’ Tommy Brooks made a perfect

corner kick which Jack Menzia then headed into the corner of the net

to take the lead. The final score was 3-3.

The Tidal Waves won again Saturday, defeating the Patriot Team

6-1. Again, Eli Kiani lead the scoring effort with a hat trick. Shane

Silver was all over the ball as it crossed goal line for the first

goal.

The third and fourth goals were scored by Kevin Thomsen with a

solid kick up the middle and by Areya Aresh with a left-footed boot.

Cole Martin defended the goal for three quarters and was named

team mvp.

In girls under-16 play:

* Demonstrating both great offense and defense under the direction

of the coaching staff, Corona del Mar won, 4-1, against Tustin on

Saturday.

Solid midfield play allowed forward Olivia Paladin to drive in two

breakaway goals, while midfielders Su Yin Bickner and Annalise

Leffler also scored.

Chloe Addington, Kelly Holt, Alison Luke, and Stevie Restaino

contributed to the offensive success and the effective defense was

anchored by stopper Caitlin Dick.

Fullbacks Allie Cremo, Mallory Martin and Lacey Schmidt, primary

goalie for the game, all made significant defensive plays.
