Corona del Mar knocks off El Toro
Corona del Mar High’s boys water polo team held off a ferocious El
Toro rally in the fourth quarter to capture a 10-7 nonleague victory
Friday in the Sea Kings’ pool.
Thomas Pearson and Tom Money each scored four goals for the Sea
Kings (9-7), who host Servite at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Jacob Murphy and
Kyle Hersh each added one goal for Corona del Mar, while goalie
Gaston Stanford provided 11 saves and two steals.
El Toro trailed, 9-3, after three quarters, but outscored CdM,
4-1, in the fourth period.

Webster ignites squad
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated host Idaho,
3-2, Friday in Big West Conference action.
Gina Scachetti, a senior for UCI (4-9-2, 1-4 in the Big West),
scored her first career goal on a rebound shot off an assist from
sophomore Britney Webster at the 22:47 mark. Webster would score a
goal of her own in the 74th minute on a through ball from freshman
Frankee Kelly.
After Idaho tied it, 2-2, at the 80:25 mark, the Anteaters stormed
right back 15 seconds later with Webster crossing the ball to
freshman Makenzie Beahm, whose header was the eventual game-winner at
80:40.
Idaho keeper Lindsay Smith had four saves on the afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Welliver had six saves for the
Anteaters.
UCI continues on the road to Logan, Utah to face Utah State at 11
a.m. Sunday.
Chavis leads OCC
* SOCCER: Sophomore Jenny Chavis scored her fifth goal of the
season on a pass from Christine Crosson and the Orange Coast College
women’s soccer team made it stand for a 1-0 victory over visiting
Santa Ana in an Orange Empire Conference match Friday.
Chavis scored in the 31st minute and Coast’s defense held the lead
despite several Santa Ana attacks in the second half.
Goalkeeper Kara DeMille made three saves in tallying her seventh
shutout this season for Coast (9-3-1, 7-3 in the OEC).
Santa Ana fell to 6-5-1, 5-4.
Pirates tie Fullerton at 4
* SOCCER: The Orange Coast College men’s soccer team erased a 3-0
halftime deficit with four second-half goals, but host Fullerton
added its final score in the 70th minute, forcing a 4-4 tie in an
Orange Empire Conference match Friday.
Matt Schirmer gave Coast (6-3-3, 4-1-2 in the OEC) a 4-3 lead in
the 68th minute with his second goal, on an assist from Jose Serpas,
before the Hornets (5-2-5, 2-2-3) tallied the equalizer.
Serpas and Greg Reese added goals while Irwin Salas had two
assists. Reese’s goal from 35 yards out tied the game at 3. Coast
goalkeeper Hector Campos added an assist and one save -- he leaped to
deflect a Hornet shot over the crossbar -- after taking over in the
second half.
Gauchos sweep ‘Eaters
* VOLLEYBALL: Kelly Wing of UC Irvine provided 19 kills and 12
digs, but host UC Santa Barbara swept the Anteaters, 30-28, 30-21,
30-26, in Big West Conference action.
The Gauchos improved to 11-3, 6-2 in the Big West. UCI fell to
12-5, 5-3.
