UC Irvine wins title at Cal Poly
The UC Irvine women’s cross country team, with three runners placing
in the top 11, captured the title of the VS Athletics/Cal Poly
invitational in San Luis Obispo Saturday.
The Anteaters finished with 50 points, the See Jane Run club team
was second with 58 and Cal State Fullerton was third with 75 at
Cuesta College.
UCI senior Kim Ramirez was the first collegiate runner and second
overall with a time of 17:54.7 over 5,000 meters. See Jane Run’s
Erika Aklufi won the race in 17:37.6.
The Anteaters’ Marie Nguyen finished seventh (18:33.4), Candice
Proctor was 11th (18:43.6) and Erinn Kim placed 15th (18:53.6). Kim
Handel finished 18th in 18:57.8, Kaleena Yee was 19th in 18:58.8 and
Elaine Gillespie placed 28th in 19:11.3 to complete UCI’s top seven.
Host Cal Poly won the men’s title with 51 points to edge out UCI
(53) and Cal State Fullerton (57). Sean Ricketts, an unattached
runner, won the 8,000-meter race in 25:52.7.
UCI junior Ricky Barnes finished fifth in 26:27.6 and teammate Tom
Whelan was sixth in 26:28.3. The Anteaters’ Andrew Garratt placed
15th (27:01.1), John Kluve was 21st (27:10.3), Tim Heart was 28th
(27:29.0), David Santos was 29th (27:31.3) and Matt Grilli finished
48th (28:10.6) to round out UCI’s top seven.
The Anteaters compete in the Cal State Fullerton invitational
Friday.
Tars win in triple OT
* WATER POLO: Jovan Vranes scored three goals for Newport Harbor
High’s boys water polo team and teammates Brett Auer and Nate
Castillo added two each as the host Sailors edged Los Alamitos, 7-6,
in triple overtime Saturday in nonleague action.
Michael Robinson recorded 11 goalie saves for Newport Harbor
(9-6). Los Al fell to 14-6.

Stanford tops UC Irvine
* WATER POLO: Peter Varellas scored four goals to lead No.
2-ranked Stanford past No. 8 UC Irvine, 10-5, in Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation men’s water polo action Saturday.
The host Cardinal (12-2, 2-0 in the MPSF) built an 8-0 lead early
in the third quarter before UCI senior Rick Merlo scored the first of
his four goals with 2:03 left in that period.
Andrew Dunn scored the other goal for the Anteaters (8-8, 0-2) and
goalie Joe Wynne had nine saves.
UCI hosts Pepperdine at noon today in a nonconference game at the
Anteater Aquatics Complex.

UCI sweeps Mustangs
* VOLLEYBALL: UC Irvine senior outside hitter Kelly Wing pounded a
match-high 17 kills and added 14 digs to lead the Anteaters to a
30-23, 30-28, 30-28 Big West Conference women’s volleyball win ayt
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Saturday.
Whitney Pavlik and Trisha White had 14 and 10 digs, respectively,
for the winners, who improve to 13-5, 6-3 in conference. UCI setter
Ashlie Hain had 41 assists. Cal Poly fell to 2-16, 0-9.
‘Eaters rally for win
* SOCCER: Lorne Howlett and Damon Manak scored second-half goals
for UC Irvine’s men’s soccer team Saturday night as the host
Anteaters edged Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, in Big West Conference
action.
Howlett scored off a corner with assists from Brandon Tario and
Brad Evans at the 62:23 mark to tie the game, 1-1, then Manak scored
off a corner with an assist from Doug Franco.
Cameron Rossi recorded 11 goalie saves for UC Irvine (5-8-0, 1-3
in the Big West). Cal State Fullerton fell to 2-7-2, 1-3.
