Anteaters’ Rossi is Big West Conference Co-Player of Week
UC Irvine senior goalkeeper Cameron Rossi has been named Big West
Conference Co-Player of the Week in men’s soccer.
Rossi, recognized for his play against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
and Cal State Fullerton, shares the honor with Willie Sims of Cal
State Northridge. UCI defeated Cal State Fullerton, 2-1, Saturday,
after posting a 2-1 overtime triumph over Cal Poly Wednesday.
Rossi had 18 combined saves in the two games and now has 211 saves
in his career to put him in the Big West Conference career top 10.
Rossi is also in the Big West career top 10 in shutouts with 13 and
goals against average, allowing 1.23 goals per game.
This season, Rossi is tied for the Big West lead with 53 saves and
leads the conference with 6.62 saves per game, the latter ranking
fifth best in the country.
The Anteaters travel to Santa Barbara Wednesday to face the No. 3
UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at 7 p.m.
Lions defeat Lancers
* SOCCER: Vanguard University senior forward Nathan Kramer scored
in the 61st minute to help the Lions earn a 1-0 Golden State Athletic
Conference men’s soccer victory over host Cal Baptist Monday in
Riverside.
Kramer made a long run with the ball across the top of the box,
before freeing himself from a defender near the right side of the
penalty area. He drove the ball inside the left post for his eighth
goal of the season.
Vanguard goalkeeper Tommaso Bianchi made four saves to record the
shutout and improve the Lions to 12-4, 6-1 in conference. Vanguard
has blanked eight opponents this season.
Vanguard outshot the Lancers, 18-9, including a game-high four
shots by forward Matt Hess.
Cal Baptist fell to 4-7-1, 2-5.
The Lions return to action Thursday when they play host to Fresno
Pacfic at 7 p.m.
May wins season finale
* VOLLEYBALL: Newport Harbor High product Misty May wrapped up the
2004 Association of Volleyball Professionals beach tour with a
victory Sunday in Santa Barbara.
May, teaming with Kerri Walsh, with whom she captured the Olympic
gold medal in Athens this past summer, defeated Holly McPeak and
Elaine Youngs, 14-21, 21-14, 15-13, to win the Santa Barbara Open.
The winners split $15,000.
May and Walsh defeated Carrie Bush and Nancy Mason, 21-11, 23-21,
in the semifinals.
Bianchi Lion of Week
SOCCER: Vanguard University junior men’s soccer goalkeeper Tommaso
Bianchi has been named Lion of the Week by the school, as well as
Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Week
Bianchi, who posted shutouts in five straight GSAC victories
through Tuesday, had 10 combined saves in a 2-0 win over Point Loma
Nazarene (Oct. 6) and a 6-0 triumph over Hope International (Oct. 9).
Bianchi had helped the Lions to an 11-4 record, 5-1 in conference
through Saturday’s 3-2 road loss to Azusa Pacific.
