Stem-cell initiative a hot topic at UCI

UC Irvine will host an all-day symposium Wednesday to examine the

effects of the state initiative that promotes stem-cell research.

If Proposition 71, the Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative, is

passed in November, $3 billion in state general obligation bonds over

10 years will provide funding for stem-cell research.

The event, titled “Developing Stem-Cell Therapies,” will include

scientists, policy experts and ethicists to discuss the possible

effects of Proposition 71 and stem-cell therapies. The keynote

speaker, Helen Blau, is a leader in developmental biology and

molecular pharmacology.

The symposium will include three sessions, “Basic Research on Stem

Cells,” “Properties and Therapeutic Potentials of Stem Cells” and

“Science, Ethics and Policies of Stem-Cell Therapy.” Registration is

between 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Lunch will be from noon to 1 p.m., and an

hors d’oeuvres reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m.

The event will be at Beckman Center of the National Academies, 100

Academy Way. Reservations are required for each session and for lunch

and the reception.
