Rain isn’t set to let up

Newport Beach is bracing for still heavier rain forecasted for today,

city officials said.

The city will be handing out up to 10 empty sandbags for residents

who face flooding risks. The bags are available from the city of

Newport Beach Corporation Yard at 592 Superior Ave., Building A, from

7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood watch on Monday

until Thursday, when the rain is expected to taper off.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol in Newport Beach has

issued a small-craft advisory, warning owners of smaller boats to

stay off the water until the storms calm down, said Sgt. Karl Von

Voight.

Otherwise, it has been rather quiet in the harbor, he said.

“It’s been raining everywhere else,” Von Voight said. “But the

forecast for [Tuesday night] is increasing winds with rain. So, we’re

just going to wait and watch.”

The small-craft advisory went into effect at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and

is expected to last until later today, he said.

No sandbags will be available at any of the city’s fire stations,

officials said. The bags may be filled with beach sand, but city

officials ask that the sand be returned to the beach after the storm

season.
