Junior Natalie Draganza earned medalist honors with a 3-over-par 39

to lead the Newport Harbor High girls golf team to a 243-247 Sea View

League victory against visiting Aliso Niguel in the rain at Big

Canyon Country Club Tuesday.

Kayleigh Horn followed Draganza with a 47 while Ashley Jacobs and

Katie McKay each carded 51s to go with a 55 by Kendall Horn for the

Sailors (6-6, 3-4 in league).

Newport exacted revenge on Aliso (7-6, 5-2), which prevailed,

201-214, in the teams’ first meeting this year at Aliso Viejo Golf

Club.

The Sailors face host Santa Margarita -- weather permitting -- at

3 p.m. at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club today before resuming

league play against Irvine Thursday at Big Canyon.

Concordia sweeps VU

* VOLLEYBALL: The visiting Concordia University women’s volleyball

team limited Vanguard to a .110 hitting percentage en route to a

30-22, 30-28, 30-22 Golden State Athletic Conference victory. Sonrisa

Peace led the Lions (21-8, 8-5 in the GSAC) with nine kills while

Raquel Ferreira paced the Eagles (20-2, 11-2) with 16 kills.

Sea Kings stun Servite

* WATER POLO: Thomas Pearson scored with 1 minute, 58 seconds left

in the second three-minute overtime period and the Corona del Mar

High boys water polo team held on for a 9-8 nonleague,

come-from-behind victory over visiting Servite Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (10-7) scored the game’s final five goals after

trailing, 8-4, at the end of three quarters.

Jacob Murphy tied the game at 8 with two seconds left in

regulation after grabbing the rebound from Tom Money’s shot.

Pearson tallied a game-high five goals to go with three steals

while Murphy scored twice and added four steals for CdM, ranked fifth

in CIF Southern Section Division I. Kyle Hersh and Bryan Buhagiar

(three assists) each scored one goal.

CdM goalkeeper Gaston Sanford made six saves and added two steals.

Pirates tame Tigers

* SOCCER: Sophomore Eli Solis and freshman Irwin Salas each scored

a goal and added an assist to lead the host Orange Coast College

soccer team to a 6-0 Orange Empire Conference victory over Riverside

Tuesday.

Six different players scored goals for the Pirates (7-3-3, 5-1-2

in the OEC), who took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

John Gauthier, Greg Reese, Greg Brown and Matt Schirmer each

tallied one goal. Will Sanchez drew a penalty kick to help set up

Gauthier’s goal.

Trent Painter made five saves in 85 minutes before giving way to

Hector Campos for the final five minutes. The Tigers fell to 6-4-2,

3-4-1.

Spartans edge Sailors

* WATER POLO: Top-ranked Villa Park High scored two goals in the

fourth quarter and held host Newport Harbor scoreless the final seven

minutes to earn a 7-6 boys water polo nonleague victory Tuesday.

Jovan Vranes led the Sailors (9-7) with four goals and four steals

while Shea Buckner also scored four times for the Spartans, ranked

No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division II.

Daniel Furman and Brett Auer each scored one goal while keeper

Michael Robinson made 10 saves for Newport, ranked sixth in CIF

Division I. Freshman Nate Castillo had three steals while Furman and

Auer each contributed two.

Eagles absorb first loss

* WATER POLO: Visiting Saddleback High outscored Estancia, 10-4,

in the second half and moved into a tie with the Eagles in the Golden

West League following a 16-6 victory Tuesday.

Sean Goodman led the Eagles (8-7, 3-1 in league) with three goals

while Chad Kunert (two) and Danny Alderete (one) added to the

scoring. Eagle goalkeeper Richard McElveny made nine saves.

David Garcia scored a game-high five goals for the Roadrunners

(12-9, 3-1), who, like the Eagles, are one game behind league-leading

Costa Mesa (4-0) with two league contests remaining.

Lightning win in four

* VOLLEYBALL: Middle blocker Haywood Wright tallied 14 kills and

five blocks to help the Sage Hill School girls volleyball team move

into sole possession of second place in the Academy League with a

29-27, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17 victory over host Brethren Christian

Tuesday.

Cat Dailey slammed 18 kills and added four blocks while Vista

Murphy had 17 kills and three aces for the Lightning (10-5, 4-1 in

league). Sophomore setter Kelsey Lawler amassed 53 assists for Sage.

Brethren Christian fell to 8-3, 3-2 in league.

Sunbirds down Lions

* SOCCER: On a waterlogged field Tuesday night, visiting Fresno

Pacific defeated Vanguard, 2-0, in a Golden State Athletic Conference

women’s soccer game.

Newport boys place 5th

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Newport Harbor High boys cross country team

placed fifth in Division II at the Orange County championships

Saturday at Irvine Regional Park.

Nicholas St. Andre placed 12th overall to lead the Sailors with a

time of 15:53. Rounding out the top five were: Kenny Rakestraw (11th,

15:59), Martin Bernard (26th, 16:11), Wesley Urtusuastegui (56th,

16:37) and Cameron MacLaren (83rd, 16:59).

Sage Hill tops Eagles

* TENNIS: The Sage Hill School girls tennis team beat host

Capistrano Valley Christian, 16-2, Monday in an Academy League match.

Senior Sarah Flynn and sophomore Alle Hsu did not lose a game at

No. doubles to propel the Lightning (8-5, 6-1 in league) to victory.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division V,

travels to Brethren Christian Friday.
