What’s the most important issue facing the city?
All the issues facing the city are important. Marinapark, John
Wayne Airport, local traffic and parking congestion, Fourth of July
-- these are some. Also, the city neglects and discriminates against
women in Newport Beach. Even though all the candidates recognize the
city is adequately funded, they continue through taxing feminine
hygiene machines. This type of taxation would not be accepted if
there was adequate representation of women on the council.
What is your opinion of how the Greenlight law is affecting the
city, and what is your position on plans to build a hotel at
Marinapark?
Marinapark would not be an issue if the incumbent would have done
his homework when it came to the vote. He voted on the [environmental
review], and it passed. He was the deciding factor. He placed a vote
before doing his civil duties.
Generally, I am against uncontrolled growth. I am especially
against the Marinapark resort. We cannot expect an area to be
revitalized by putting a five-star hotel in the middle of it. A
nearby 7-Eleven is not going to relocate, and there is already a
problem with it being a local hangout for kids.
Start with revitalizing the area now to correct the problems, not
to add more. Parking and the flow of traffic is another problem in
the area.
The bottom line is that I feel each project needs to be addressed
individually on its own merits.
Are city leaders doing a good job handling the budget and
pressures on it from the state?
They are doing too well when they are taxing women’s tampon
machines. Generally, yes. The more important pressures appear to be
from the county government and legion alliances, which could use more
Newport Beach City input (John Wayne Airport).
How should the city handle possible expansion of John Wayne
Airport and St. Andrew’s Church?
In regards to St. Andrew’s, the residents of Newport Beach have
spoken strongly on this issue. I will do everything I can to support
that. The area is not appropriate for this addition. I would like to
see if the church has added additional services or maybe an off-site
campus to help problem teens. All too often in the past, the needs of
residents have been neglected by the county. I am not in favor of
expansion. In fact, I think we should cut back the number of flights
now.
