Sea Kings tie for top spot
The Corona del Mar girls golf team avenged its loss to University
earlier this season by defeating the visiting Trojans, 222-224,
Thursday at Newport Beach Country Club -- putting the teams in a tie
for first place in the Pacific Coast League.
CdM’s Katie Albright shot a 38 to become the medalist on the wet,
slow course. Katie McKittrick (43), Jonna Kim (45), Michelle Albrecht
(46) and Caitlin McDonald (50) were the top finishers for the Sea
Kings (10-1, 6-1 in league). CdM gave University (11-1, 6-1) its
first loss in league play.
Newport ekes it out
* VOLLEYBALL: The Newport Harbor High girls volleyball team
defeated Foothill 25-15, 15-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-12 in a grueling Sea
View League battle Thursday at Newport.
Kiley Hall led the Sailors (8-7, 5-1 in league) with 13 kills,
while Stephanie Trinen and Coco Yokoyama added 10 kills each. Bryana
Carey had five kills and Taryn Tarnutzer had two blocks and one ace.
OCC takes second
* VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore outside hitter Melissa Zapiain led all
players with 22 kills to lead the Orange Coast College women’s
volleyball team to a 24-30, 32-30, 30-26, 30-25 win over Cypress on
Wednesday in Orange Empire Conference play at OCC.
With the win, the Pirates (8-3, 4-2 in conference) grabbed a share
of second place in the conference, along with Cypress.
Lions win in 89th minute
* SOCCER: Sophomore Stacia Hoover scored an 89th-minute breakaway
goal to lift the Vanguard women’s soccer team to an upset 1-0 victory
over host California Baptist in a Golden State Athletic Conference
game Thursday afternoon.
The Lions (7-7-2, 2-5-1 in conference) won for just the second
time in their last eight games. It was the Lancers (9-5, 4-3) third
straight loss, all on goals at the end of the game.
Harbor doubles up
* WATER POLO: The Newport Harbor High boys water polo team doubled
Laguna Beach’s score, winning, 12-6, Thursday at Newport Harbor.
Dan Furman and Clay Jorth led the Sailors (11-7, 2-1 in league)
with three goals apiece, while Jovan Vranes and Brett Auer had two
each.
Michael Robinson had five saves for the Sailors.

Sage back on track
* GOLF: Coming off a loss last week to Orange, the Sage Hill
School girls golf team turned things around and picked up a 254-277
win over Estancia on Thursday at the par-36 Rancho San Joaquin
course.
Sage’s Justine Chen shot a 36 to become the medalist. The rest of
the top finishers for Sage (10-3, 10-2 in league) were: Emma Koh
(49), Natalie Kraft (54), Kimberly Venditozzi (56) and Madison Killis
(57).
Tars win on damp course
* GOLF: Medalist Natalie Draganza shot a 40 to lead the Newport
Harbor girls golf team to a 231-291 victory over Irvine on Thursday
at the par-36 Big Canyon Country Club.
Kayeigh Horn (45), Ashley Jacobs (46), Katie McKay (49) and
Kendall Horn (51) were the top finishers for Newport (7-6, 4-4 in
league) on the wet course.
Foothill defeats Sailors
* TENNIS: Freshman Alex McIntosh and junior Brittany Cluck swept
at No. 3 doubles for host Newport Harbor High, but it wasn’t enough
to avert a 10-8 Sea View League girls tennis loss to Foothill
Thursday.
The loss dropped the Sailors to 9-7, 4-2 in league. Newport Harbor
defeated Foothill, 11-7, to open league play.

Junior Chad Kunert scored the deciding goal for the Eagles (9-8,
3-1 in the Golden West League) on a breakaway with 3:09 left in the
fourth quarter.

‘Eaters upset Gauchos
* SOCCER: The UC Irvine men’s soccer team upset No. 2 UC Santa
Barbara, 1-0, Thursday in a Big West Conference match in Santa
Barbara.
Chris Klotz took a cross from Anthony Hamilton and scored at the
73:24 mark for the game’s only goal. Senior goalkeeper Cameron Rossi
earned his 14th career shutout in the win while picking up one save.
The Gauchos (11-2-1, 4-2-0) had not been shut out this season. UCI
improved to 6-8-0, 2-3-0.
Vanguard defeats foe
* SOCCER: Host Vanguard University knocked off Fresno Pacific,
5-2, in Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer action Thursday
night as the Lions improved to 13-4, 7-1 in the GSAC, while the
Sunbirds, ranked No. 6 in the NAIA, fell to 12-2-1, 4-2-1.
Lightning storms pool
* WATER POLO: The Sage Hill School boys water polo team defeated
visiting Los Amigos, 5-4, Thursday at Corona del Mar High.
Juniors Julian Tooma and Jordan Cline led the Lightning with two
goals apiece and Senior John Neff scored one.
