OCC takes down No. 1
The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team battled host Golden
West College, ranked No. 1 in California, through five games and came
out victorious 18-30, 21-30, 30-28, 30-23, 15-12, Friday night in
Orange Empire Conference action.
Melissa Zapiain had two kills near the end of the fifth game, and
Donka Drozd had one to help topple Golden West. Zapiain finished with
42 kills and Drozd with 22. Sammy Connors added 21 kills as OCC
improved its record to 10-1, 6-1 in conference.
Orange Coast started the first two games strong, but too many
unforced errors caused those games to slip away. But Coast scratched
and clawed its way back to win the next three in dramatic fashion.
Coast upped the pressure on its serves during the last three
games, which eventually led to the downfall of Golden West (10-1,
6-1).
