Lions making right by helping sight

JIM DE BOOM

The Harbor Mesa Lions will hold its annual casino night fundraiser,

“Viva Las Vegas” on Friday at the Neighborhood Community Center in

Costa Mesa.

This event is the main fundraiser for the club each year, enabling

it to give funds to local charities and the Lion’s Sight and Hearing

Foundation.

The Sight and Hearing Foundation sponsors vision and hearing tests

in local schools each year by supplying the Lion’s International

Sight and Hearing Van. The van is equipped with a soundproof room for

administering hearing tests for up to six children each time, and

vision testing equipment for use by school nurses.

This year’s casino night is chaired by past presidents Joan Parks

and Marianne Segalla. The event will start at 7 p.m. and features

gambling tables, a silent auction, dinner and dancing. The tickets

are $30 apiece, which includes the dinner, one drink and $100 in

gambling scrip.

For further information, or to purchase tickets, call (949)

548-2440 or (714) 641-0664.

NEW WEBSITE

President Lee Gibbs of the Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club

reports that the club has moved its website to a new location at

https://www.cmnhlions.com. It is a website without pop-up ads, which

the previous site had. It is easy to use and is informative. It even

notes the Fish Fry dates are June 4 and 5, 2005 at Lions Park. Take a

look!

CROP OPEN HOUSE

Did you know that high school students and adults in Orange County

are able to take career preparation classes through Coastline

Regional Occupational Program? Courses like crime scene

investigation, first responder, medical/nursing careers, computer

networking and many others are offered through CROP.

An open house will be held on Nov. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon at 1001

Presidio Square in Costa Mesa. You will have a chance to observe a

class in session, meet the counselors and enjoy some refreshments.

For further information, please call (714) 979-1955, ext. 216, or

visit the ROP website at https://www.coastline

rop.k12.ca.us.

SISTER CITY CELEBRATION

The Newport Beach Sister City Assn. invites all to celebrate the

20th anniversary of friendship between Newport Beach and Okazaki,

Japan, at a 7:30 p.m. dinner on Nov. 9 at Zubies Chicken Coop. Zubies

is at 414 Old Newport Blvd. in Newport Beach.

A delegation from Okazaki that includes city representatives, an

essay winner and a friendship group will be honored at an All

American Dinner. The cost is $20 per person and reservations can be

made by calling Connie Skibba at (949) 650-0594 by Nov. 1.

BIRTHDAY DINNER

Barbara and I enjoyed a fine dinner for my birthday at the Balboa

Bay Club this past week and were impressed with the food, service and

how busy the club was that night.

The hotel portion of the club was sold out, all of the meeting

rooms in the main clubhouse area were filled to capacity and the

dining rooms were filling up fast. In Duke’s Place, the band knew not

to play while game seven of the Boston-New York baseball series was

going on, as most of the people were Boston fans.

To me, it looked like the Balboa Bay Club hit its stride as the

host of the coast!

WORTH REPEATING

From the Thought for Today, provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport

Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council: “You can hardly make a friend in a

year, but you can easily offend one in an hour.”

-- Chinese proverb
