Newport sets gold standard

Newport Harbor High’s varsity sailing team began the season on a

winning note, claiming the gold division title of the two-day Sea

Otter Regatta in Monterey, Calif., which concluded Sunday.

Matt Hogan, Brooke Thomson, Cole Hatton and Lauren Gautschi led

Newport to victory, earning 60 points in the seven races. Newport’s

junior varsity squad tallied 63 points to finish second. Corona del

Mar’s varsity squad took third with 75 points in the 18-team field.

CdM’s junior varsity team finished seventh with 111 points while Sage Hill placed 11th with 134 points.

CdM, Newport and Sage all compete in the Pacific Coast region,

which includes about 40 boats representing 25 to 30 schools.

The next competition is the “So Cal #2” in Coronado Nov. 13

followed by the Anteater regatta in Newport Beach Dec. 11-12.

The same teams will sponsor a high school sailing day for students

from Shalimar School this Saturday at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club,

720 W. Bay Ave. in Newport Beach.

The event is an chance to teach students about sailing who

otherwise wouldn’t have such an opportunity.
