Sowers girls’ continue to roll
Both the Sowers Middle School seventh- and eighth-grade girls’
basketball teams remained undefeated by winning games over Costa Mesa
and Harbor Day.
The victories over previously undefeated Costa Mesa vaulted the
Lady Vikings into sole possession of first place in both divisions,
as both Sowers squads are now 4-0.
The eighth-grade Lady Vikings opened up an eight-point halftime on
Costa Mesa, en route to a decisive 42-25 victory.
It was the triumvirate of Kelly Peterson, Mary Madden and Michelle
Yamasaki that led the Sowers triumph. The three eighth-graders,
looking to win their third consecutive championship this year, have
played on teams that have won 19 straight games.
Peterson scored 18 points, with Madden and Yamasaki adding nine
points apiece. Madden grabbed 15 rebounds.
“They lost the first game they played as sixth-graders and haven’t
lost since,” Sowers coach Kyle Morita said. “It’s a lot of pressure
because other teams really get up to play against them, but somehow
they manage.”
In a 40-7 victory later in the week over Harbor Day, Sowers was
led by the hustle of Kaitlin Davis who had nine points to go along
with nine rebounds.
Sowers’ seventh-grade squad held on for a 26-20 victory over Costa
Mesa.
Brooke Thomas led the Lady Vikings with eight points, but Sowers
also received strong support from Christina Marquette with five
points and Lindsey McCloskey and Danielle Miller, each with four
points.
