* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College women’s water polo upset
top-ranked Riverside, 7-5, in an Orange Empire Conference game held
Wednesday.
Jeanette DeMeneces and Lianne Todisco each had two goals to lead
the Pirates (18-8, 5-1 in the OEC), ranked fourth in the state, to
the victory against the No. 1 squad in California.

Lions set win record
* SOCCER: The Vanguard University men’s soccer team, which entered
the NAIA top 25 rankings for the first time this season, set a
program record for single-season victories with its 3-0 Golden State
Athletic Conference victory against Westmont at Biola University
Wednesday in a makeup game from Tuesday.
The 13th-ranked Lions (14-4, 8-1 in the GSAC), who eclipsed last
season’s win total of 13, received goals from Matt Hess, Nathan
Kramer and Mariano Salcedo, all on assists from Jose Hernandez.
Vanguard’s Tommaso Bianchi totaled six saves in earning his
conference-leading seventh shutout this season.
Newport ousts Laguna
* WATER POLO: Daniel Furman and Nate Castillo each tallied three
goals to lead the host Newport Harbor High boys water polo team to a
10-4 Sea View League victory against Laguna Hills Wednesday.
Clay Jorth, Carson Hill and Telford Cottam each scored one goal
for Newport (12-8, 3-1 in league) while senior goalkeeper Michael
Robinson made five saves.

Sea Kings stymie Trojans
* WATER POLO: The Corona del Mar High boys water polo team
remained undefeated in Pacific Coast League play with a 16-3 victory
over visiting University Wednesday.
Thomas Pearson and Walker Russell each had three goals while Tom
Money, Spencer Pirdy and Bryan Buhagiar each tallied two scores to
lead the Sea Kings (13-7, 3-0 in league) to their third consecutive
league victory. Michael Berry, Kyle Hersh, Jacob Murphy and Chad
March each added one goal for CdM.

Coast women sweep
* VOLLEYBALL: The Orange Coast College women’s volleyball team
swept host Fullerton, 30-20, 30-21, 30-23, in an Orange Empire
Conference match Wednesday.
Donka Drozd and Melissa Zapiain each had 15 kills to lead the
Pirates (10-3, 6-2 overall), who have won five straight, over the
Hornets.
Seahawks outlast Mesa
* VOLLEYBALL: Lindsey Navarrette slammed 12 kills to go with a
team-high 23 digs for the visiting Costa Mesa High’s girls volleyball
team, which fell to Golden West League powerhouse Ocean View, 25-15,
25-17, 17-25, 17-25, 15-12, Wednesday.
Tracy Bjelland matched Navarrette with 12 kills while Jackie
Havens added 30 assists for Mesa (7-5, 6-4 in league), which sits in
third place in the league standings with three matches remaining.
Heather Williams added five aces for the Mustangs. Ocean View (12-1,
9-0 in league) sits atop the league standings.
Sage Hill sweeps
* VOLLEYBALL: The host Sage Hill School girls volleyball team
defeated Capistrano Valley Christian, 25-16, 25-18, 25-19, in an Academy League match Wednesday at Sage.
Cat Dailey led the Lightning (12-5, 6-1 in league) with 11 kills
and seven aces, while Haywood Wright had six kills.
OCC men downed
* WATER POLO: The Orange Coast College men’s water polo team was
defeated by Riverside, 16-6, in an Orange Empire Conference game
Wednesday.
Paul Collier had three goals, while Austin Price, Alex Avetoom and
Todd Swanson each had one for the Pirates.
Orange Coast (6-13, 1-4 in the OEC) went down early, giving up six
goals in the first period, and trailed, 9-3, at the half.
