Arblaster shines in triumph
The Newport-Mesa Infinity boys under-13 team recorded its second
consecutive shutout with a 2-0 win over Pacific Riptide on Saturday
in AYSO Region 97 action. The game-winning goal was scored by Gavin
Arblaster in the last minute of the first half.
The goal was a result of a well-placed cross from Rodri Ruvalcaba,
which was redirected by Rory Kew before Arblaster flicked a header
over the reach of the Riptide keeper. A reaction save by Jesse Perez
earlier in the match preserved the shutout.
Juan Gonzalez scored the other goal. Strong performances were
turned in by Sean Davis, Austin Wobrock, Austin Webster and Erickson
Klein. Zac Chocek and Cameron Conway consistently stripped opponents
of the ball. The Infinity improved to 6-2-1 in league play with 35
goals scored.
In girls under-12 play:
* Purple Fanta 2, American Eagles 1
Madison Walsh capped the scoring late in the game as the Purple
Fanta rallied back for a 2-1 victory over the American Eagles. Jordin
Eakin, Corey Darling, Ani Harbottle and Kim Ficenec played solid team
defense with strong support from midfielders Lauren Clemence, Allison
Sheppard and goalies Alex Kehoe and Laura Cavillo.
Andie Ward, Remy Pascine and Katie Hurlbut moved the ball
effectively throughout the game, setting up both goals for the Purple
Fantas. Biz Buckingham’s goal gave the American Eagles an early 1-0
lead. Katie Noblett and Cece Beck also played well for the American
Eagles.
In boys under-12 play:
* Team Blue Star
Taylor Wildman, scoring a hat trick, led Blue Star to a 5-1
victory. Malcom Faigen and Griff Amies each contributed a goal
apiece. Midfielders Marco Piazza, Raddon Gross and Tyler Luna all
contributed a strong effort. Stopper Mathew Marlow and goalie Casey
Bushong made several saves in anchoring the defense.
In girls under-11 play:
* Newport 2, San Juan Capistrano 0
In the first half of the game, Francesca Cappellini sent a pass to
Nicole Dinatale who drilled a hard shot into the back of the net.
Josie Jogwe also put one away early on.
Newport’s defense played effectively, with great efforts from
Molly Anderson, Delaney Bell, Emily Mitchell, Savanna Gastineau and
Allison Schelin.
In girls under-10 play:
* Juicy Pineapples 7, Heart Breakers 2
The Juicy Pineapples dominated as Drue Cummins scored four goals,
Caroline Graham scored two goals and Tristen Ford had one. Taury
Hlinka was all over the place, assisting goals and helping out on
defense. Bailey Rieke toughed it out in the goalie box and held the
Heart Breakers at bay.
* Purple Piranhas 5, Orange Crush 1
The Orange Crush’s defense was anchored by Claire Farmer, Shannon
Barth, Nadine Lefler, Leah Van Dyke and Mady Avery. New goalie Tori
Rojas and veteran Ellisia Schilling performed very athletically, but
the wet conditions made dribbling difficult.
Schilling’s strong kicking ability kept the ball on the other end
and the pressure on the opponent. The offense, led by the hustle of
Anna Newman, remained strong. Hailey Smith, Shannon Barth, Madeline
Hal, and Abigail Griffith worked well together in passing the ball up
the field and setting up Schilling’s goal.
* Rip Curl 3, Mama Mias 2
The Rip Curls won, 3-2, with the go-ahead goal scored in the final
minutes of the fourth quarter. Roxanna Crane gave an assist to
Madison Jabara, who booted it in for the score.
The offense was paced by Emma Howard, Page Keys and Samantha
Singer. Keeping the ball out of Mama Mias’ territory were Monika
Peterson, Savannah Baron, Alyssa Ohlig, Haley Newett and Nikki Walsh.
In the goalie box for the Rip Curls were Allison Kahn and Emma
Howard, who each had four stops.
* Gryffindor Seekers 2, Green Chihuahuas 1
After the first goal of the game by the Green Chihuahuas, the
Gryffindor Seekers’ offense came back strong with a goal by Kirsten
Rohan, immediately followed by another Seeker goal by Lea Phillips.
The offense was joined by Taylor Hickerson, Samantha Stalder,
Analysa Vivanco and Katty Ayala. Defensive action was displayed by
Andie Strode, Alice Barry, Ana Figueroa and Dana Jessen. Goalies Jane
Layton and Katty Ayala foiled several Chihuahua attempts.
In girls under-8 play:
* Pink Panthers vs. Green Geckos
Tough defense by Caroline Gels, Olivia Sever, Erin Barthand and
Anna Hancock in goal kept the game scoreless until the second
quarter. Erin Barth led the way, with a goal assisted by Sabrina
Sanchez, and then added two more with assists from Mallory Gyulay.
Gyulay also tipped in two goals of her own.
Olivia Sever scored with an assist from Gabby Mangano, while Logan
Grove tallied an assist on a corner kick to Mallory Gyulay. Amanda
Dupont and Hailey Mahaffey both played hard for the Pink Panther win.
* The Hurricanes
Natalie Ward scored twice for the Hurricanes, while Kate Pipkin
added another. Kiersten Yardley chipped in her first goal of the
season while Katie Conway, Jessica Stone and Amanda Sheppard were on
the assists. Lauren Walker and Annie LaGrandeur played hard on
defense, while Abbey Pickett and Rowan Frederiksen were credited with
the shutout.
* Blue Dolphins vs. Wild Watermelons
Jordan Goldsberry played goalie for the Blue Dolphins, blocking
several shots. Sofie Bercaw, Taylor Matthew and Erin Wilson helped on
defense by kicking the ball down the field, foiling many attempts by
the Wild Watermelons.
Margaret Molloy, Sophie Smith and Claudia Davis led the team’s
offense, repeatedly charging the Wild Watermelons goal.
In boys under-8 play:
* Red Eyed Dragon vs. Mustard and Ketchup
Early in the game, Jake Parks made the first set of goals,
followed by Davis Hanscom’s first goal of the season. Cory Stowell
also assisted and scored.
Erick Pineda covered the field extensively on both offense and
defense, along with great goaltending by Daniel Pham and Wills
Johnson. Jordon Wicks, Bryan Rivera and Joseph Salas solidified the
Dragon’s teamwork.
* Waterbombs vs. Unknown
The Waterbombs attacked the Unknown’s goal many times, with Ryan
Braun, Alejandro Solis and Jack Binford scoring. Assists and offense
came from Griffith Clawson, Slater Anderson and Parker Young.
Collin Rowe and Quinton McKay supported the Waterbombs’ efforts
with solid play in the midfield. Micah Adelsohn battled in the
Waterbombs’ defense, while the Unknown offense put great pressure on
Collin Rowe and Ryan Braun’s skills in the goal.
In girls under-7 play:
* Firecrackers vs. Go Go Girls Shine
Seneca Fuller scored two goals for the Firecrackers. Also scoring
goals for the Firecrackers were Peyton Espley-Jones, Kate Hefner and
Clair Olmstead. Alexis Abrams, Sydney Conn and Julianna Eifler played
solid in goal and on defense.
* Gators 4, Dolphins 3
Emily Goltz had her first goal of the season for the Speckled
Green Gators in their game against the Dolphins. Also scoring were
Olivia Jones, Megan Keys and Jacque DeFeo for the Gators. Emma
Vujnovich, Sara Boese, Paige Tamblyn and Katie Kearns kept the
Dolphins at bay.
In boys under-7 play:
* Predators
Shane Mitchell, playing one of his best games of the year, scored
from long distance to even the game. Dillon Murphy and Avery Rowe
came close several times before the Predators took the lead from a
low, hard shot by Alex Forman.
After halftime, the Predator defense again gave up a goal to the
Dragons. Alden Burke, Joey Moddelmog and Davis Clement’s tireless
running paid off when the Predators’ star defender Carter Scott
forced home a goal from short range minutes before the final whistle.
* Salty Sea Dawgs
Peter Harano, Jake Weyrich and J.D. Dennis played solid defense
with good hustle. Kingston Mc Carthy, Jack Rapillo and Jordan Teisan
turned in good play on both ends of the field, while Andrew Laidlaw,
Sean Korkmaz and Jeremiah Sheldon scored goals.
In girls under-6 play:
* Flamingos vs. Blue Dolphins
McKenzie Porteous received a booming defensive kick from Erika
Ellis and scored first for the Flamingos on a breakaway. Porteous
then returned the favor and assisted Erika Ellis on her first of
three goals.
Julia Ackerman scored two and Porteous also added a second goal.
Madeline Phillips positioned herself well and played tough on both
offense and defense, while Kate McAllister and Mandy Tapfer played
well throughout.
* Pink Dolphins vs. Fire Flies
Charlie Toffel, Callie Govaars and Claire Johnson each scored
goals for the Dolphins. Natalie Capellini had numerous passes, while
Kate Granoff had many pivotal steals. Marley Mais had a near miss on
goal and was in the action for several key defensive maneuvers.
Fireflies’ lead forward Sianna Siemonsma came on strong against
the Pink Dolphins and scored several goals throughout the game,
including a face-off goal in the third quarter.
Jenna Eakin and Allison Hanscom kept the ball in motion with
aggressive defense, while Katie Ramm stayed active in the pack. Katie
O’Hea snuck in her first goal of the season and added a defensive
block.
* Blue Sharks vs. Yellow Bumblebees
Multiple goals were scored by Taylor Craig, Lauren Vissman and
Lily Woodall. Several attempts at goal were made by Melelani Falasco
and Danielle Wilson.
In boys under-6 play:
* Cheetahs vs. Maroon Monsters
Although missing James Hodges due to a foot injury, the Cheetah
offense played strategically, with consistent dribbling, multiple
passes and tricky reverses. Lucas Hodges moved the ball downfield,
while Chandler Siemonsma scored one goal on a pass from Jack
McClintock, off another pass by Ashe Deering.
McClintock and Deering each continued their own scoring streaks --
both had three goals. Josh Jenkins played solid defense, while Jon
Hodges threw himself into the pack to fight for the ball.
* Purple Dragons
Max Toffel and brother, Ben, played aggressive, while Dominic
Loftus, seeing an open net and loose ball, scored first for the
Dragons. Barron Banta was sliding all over the field, both defending
and attacking for the Dragons. Chase Adelsohn and Nic Rimlinger
worked hard advancing the ball and Malcolm Davis kept the pressure on
the opponents.
* Riding Giants
Corbin Joyce scored three goals for the Giants, while Connor
Turnbow-Lindenstadt and Jacob Duehring had two each. Garth
Blumenthal, Andrew Stoneman and Jake Smith also played well.
In boys under-5 play:
* Blue Barracudas vs. Green Soccer-a-Saureses
Patrick Wynn and Brandon Rivera followed through with goals after
being assisted by the defensive skills of Jantzen Fenn and Noah
Christensen. On offense, determination was shown by Justin Shollin
and Kyle Langdon-Weyrich.
