Saturday scoring barrage
The Corona del Mar AYSO Region 57 boys under-12 soccer team began the
second half of the season with an 8-0 victory over Pacific South
United on Saturday. Colton Gyulay started the scoring blitz with a
goal in the opening minutes.
By the half, Kjell Wolker had scored one goal and Gyulay had two
for a 3-0 lead. Precise passing by Brent Lawson, Blake Thomsen, Wil
Morrow, Jack Gorab and Mason Case controlled offensive action.
Defensive plays by Brent Gray, Brennan Anderson, Jensen Rinehart,
Nick Curci and goalie, Logan Newett -- with four saves -- helped in
earning another shutout. Five more goals were tallied in the second,
with goals by Taylor Ross and Steven Miller, Wolker and Gyulay.
* Purplicious 3, Oreos 2
After a scoreless first half, Purplicious fell behind 2-0 early in
the third quarter. Then Megan Otterbein broke open the scoring with a
goal, followed by Bryn Hastings, who lofted one from more than 18
yards out, over the goalie’s head.
With the game still tied 2-2 in the fourth, Kelly O’Connor also
lofted one from beyond the penalty box to win the game.
Samantha Mangione and Jackie Crosson were strong on defense, while
McKenna Caskey and Carlie Rinehart each had numerous saves in the
goal for Purplicious.
In boys under-10 play:
* Trojans 6, Tiger Sharks 2
Joseph Tatchell scored four goals to lead the Trojans. Tough
defense by Montgomery Faigen, Callum Heasley and Nicky Heston put the
pressure on for the opponents. Chris Heston assisted Kyle Flagg on a
goal, while Garrett Byers had a solid game on offense and defense.
* Orange Madness 1, Squidworks 1
Orange Madness and Squidworks played to a 1-1 tie in a battle that
went back and forth. Squidworks scored first, but Orange Madness came
back to tie on a goal by Chase Alibrando, assisted by Cole Caminiti
and Nate Pozin. Anthony Cecere unleashed several fierce shots for
Orange Madness, but Squidworks’ strong defense and goalkeeping kept
the score even.
* Green Vipers 2, Squidworks 2
The Vipers got on the scoreboard first when Jack Menzia’s penalty
kick ricocheted off the goalie, and forward Jake Hastings punched it
in for a goal, in a game played Oct. 16. Menzia had an assist later
to Matt Elmajian for the Vipers’ second goal.
Tommy Brooks was in goal for the fourth quarter, saving three
goals and preserving the tie. Liam Karas, Drew Hanson and Ricky Nadal
were also solid in goalie duties. Chris Beyrooty dominated the
midfield throughout the game.
* Stingers 3, Tidal Waves 2
Alex Asdourian scored all three goals in the Stingers win -- twice
with assists from Tomo Andry. Strong goalkeeping efforts from Greg
Williford and Luke Meleski led the defense, while Daemon Kane and
Tyler Duncan controlled the midfield.
In girls under-10 play:
* Fireworks 3, Titans 1
The Fireworks scored three goals in the first half, thanks to
strong midfield play by Kelsey Humphreys, goals by Shelby Brown and
assists by Eliza Day. The Titans kept the game competitive and were
able to score on a bouncing goal by Taylor Rule in second half.
Strong goalie efforts by Olivia Dajee, Taylor Rule and Megan Diaz
from the Titans, along with Hannah Mishow and Taryn Beaufort from the
Fireworks, prevented further goals from being scored. The Fireworks’
defensive efforts from Tana Cooper, Emily Day, Sheila Sadr and Devon
Tucker also contributed to the win.
* SunKissed 4, Purple Panthers 1
Emily Krebs scored two goals for SunKissed, with assists from
Natasha Fisker. Sara Machoskie and Fisker each had a goal. Olivia
Peterson, Alexa Losey and Kate Allen played at fullback, while
Katherine Noe showcased midfield passing. Marit Vangrow played at
sweeper and Jaime Kingkade played solid defense.
* SunKissed 3, Fierce Fionas 1
Kate Allen, Natasha Fisker and Emily Krebs all scored off assists
by Sara Machoskie in a game played Oct. 9. Katherine Noe, Alexa
Losey, Allen and Fisker protected well as goal keepers.
Marit Vangrow and Jaime Kingkade played solid defense, while Noe
and Olivia Peterson had numerous shots on goal.
In girls under-6 play:
* Dolphins vs. Green Mermaids
Multiple goals were scored by Becca Roque and Erika Anderson.
Brooke Walker and Stephanie Morris added to the scoring effort, while
Cameryn Albano, Allison Barnes and Catherine Trenerry played solid
defense and had numerous assists.
* Pink Ponies vs. Sunshine Girls
Caroline Wood and Abby Wysopal scored goals for the Pink Ponies
off of assists from Jessica Saucedo and Maddie Green.
Anna Hartog and Kelly Walsh played solid defense and throws from
Amanda Corlett and Lindsey Gronendyke helped the team.
In girls under-14 play:
* Pink Power Flamingos vs. Pink Panthers
Kelly Lang and Jessica Viale led the scoring for the Flamingos,
while Kaylin Knitowski and Gabby Finear had solid passing. Jennifer
Wetton, Olivia Egly, Haley Hopkins and Savannah Stewart also scored.
