Laguna led from start to finish in downing visiting Esperanza

Tuesday, 10-7, in nonleague play.

Jeremy Frimond led all scorers with four goals and Mike Dick and

Peter Phelps each scored twice.

Single goals by Ryan Fair and Trevor Frimond completed Laguna’s

scoring.

Bret Burge recorded 17 saves.

In a previous match, Fair burned the net for eight goals as Laguna

routed visiting University, 17-3, in league action. Dick also had a

prolific offensive output with six goals and Jeremy and Trevor

Frimond and Adam Kaplan each scored once. The Breakers were up, 5-1,

after one quarter and then shutout the Trojans in the second quarter

en route to a 13-1 halftime advantage. Burge had seven saves.

In boys’ cross country, showing speed and determination, the

Laguna Beach High boys’ cross country team turned in an outstanding

performance last weekend at the Mount San Antonio College Cross

Country Invitational in Walnut.

Running the fastest cumulative time for a Dave Brobeck-coached

team on the Mt. SAC course, Laguna earned a second-place finish in

the Boys’ Division 4 Sweepstakes competition.

The division featured the best eight teams.

The Breakers’ top five runners turned in a 1:23.18.

“We had a tremendous team performance there,” Brobeck said. “The

only team to beat us was Hopi, a team from Arizona, that has won the

state championship the last six years.”

Laguna, ranked second in CIF and fifth in the state, ran past a

strong squad from Dallas and the CIF’s No. 3-ranked team, St.

Bonventure of Ventura, en route to its second-place sweepstakes

finish.

Three Laguna runners finished among the Top 10 in the race: Sean

Fuszard took third-place with a 16:07, Max Mullender placed sixth

with a 16:19 and Jeremy Eaton ran a 16:37, good for ninth-place.

“This was the first race of the season that we truly ‘raced,’ and

the guys were eager to see what they were capable of,” Brobeck said.

“We are exactly where we need to be in this training period at this

time. There are dozens of invariables at this point, however, that

ultimately will tell how we finish.

“The frosh boys also did great with a second-place finish and the

sophomore boys won their race. The future is bright. The way we’ve

built the program, we should consistently experience success year in

and year out.”

In girls’ volleyball, Laguna swept Calvary Chapel, 25-12, 25-13,

25-16, in a league match Tuesday.

The Breakers bolted to a 20-9 lead in the first game and

eventually won by 13, were tied 7-7 in game No. 2, but went on to

lead, 10-8, and never looked back, and in game No. 3, they extended

an 8-4 advantage to a 19-9 lead.

In previous league play, visiting Northwood swept past Laguna,

25-19, 25-23, 26-24, in a tight match. Stephanie Darnall paced the

Breakers with 19 kills and nine digs. Laguna improved to 4-3 in

league and 12-7 overall.

Dana Hutchinson had 17 kills and 10 digs, Paige Obradovich had 35

assists and eight digs and Jilly Petersen had 10 digs.

In girls’ tennis Tuesday, Laguna avenged an earlier loss to Tesoro

by topping the visiting Titans, 10-8.

Claire Rietsch swept at No. 1 singles for the Breakers, who are

now 5-3 in league and 12-4 overall.
