Egly decides to give it another shot

Attorney Jane Egly is making her second bid for a seat on the City

Council.

Egly came in third four years ago in a nine-horse race for two

council seats, which were won by Cheryl Kinsman and Wayne Baglin.

“I did not plan to run again, but I was asked to reconsider and I

agreed because I believe Laguna is at a crossroads,” Egly said.

She said she would not run again in a letter published in a local

paper in which she indicated she had no political motive for

criticizing Councilman Wayne Baglin for accepting a commission from

clients who sold property to the city.

Egly opposes the relocation of the corporate yard to the Act V

parking lot in Laguna Canyon and hopes to restore civility to public

discourse at council meetings.

“I see an awful lot of council decisions that are ego driven,”

supporter Dave Schaar said. “I see this council voting against an

item just because of who sponsored it. What I have seen in the past

two years doesn’t work.”

Despite an active career, Egly has been involved in community

activities. She is a former board member of the Laguna Beach Woman’s

Club. She served as president of the Laguna North Community Assn.,

which her husband now heads. She is on the board of Laguna Greenbelt

Inc. and Planned Parenthood of Orange and San Bernardino Counties.

Egly was born in 1942 in Silver Spring, Md.

She graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1964 and

earned a law degree from Wayne State College of Law in 1972.

Egly moved to California with her first husband and their two

children. She has lived in Laguna Beach since 1984 when she married

retired Judge Paul Egly.

Egly practiced law in California until 1999, including a stint in

the Orange County public defender’s office.

Since retiring, Egly has taught law at the University of Laverne

College of Law.
